Mila made her way to sit next to Gerri, who had claimed one of the two chairs across from Cyrus. Mila could barely sit. She timidly returned her eyes to the shifter, hoping not to show the weakness making her legs quiver.

When he continued to remain silent, staring into Mila’s soul, Gerri took the opportunity to begin the interview process. “Mila, my dear, why don’t you tell Cyrus a little bit about yourself and your background?”

As if snapped out of a trance, Mila straightened like she was preparing for a speech. “Well, my name is Mila Dillon, and I’m from Fremont, Nebraska. I became a flight attendant because I love to travel. I’ve been in the business a long time, and when Gerri mentioned this opportunity, she said there would be a good deal of flying involved.”

Cyrus’s eyes tracked along her face, but he didn’t nod or ask any questions. Tension blossomed between them as she got lost in his intense gaze. Gerri cleared her throat, wordlessly prompting Mila to continue.

“We … I mean, my team and I are obviously fairly adept with the latest technology involved in the travel industry. I am a quick learner, and I promise to work very hard.”

Mila shot a look at Gerri, watching Cyrus with a sly smile. Mila refocused on Cyrus’s smoldering stare and attempted to remain confident and sure of herself. His eyes had not left her since she entered the room.

Finally, Gerri cleared her throat, breaking the suspended tension. “Well, Cyrus, you can see that she is clearly a strong candidate for the position you are looking to fill, and I hope the very best for you. Let me know if there is anything I can assist you with. For now, I do have some business to attend to and a flight to catch. I will be in touch.”

Cyrus’s focus remained on Mila, unresponsive to the words. Gerri reached over to lightly touch Mila’s arm. “I am so sorry to have to run off so quickly, but you are in well-equipped hands, and I wish you the best of luck.”

Gerri pulled Mila into a hug before continuing. “If you need anything, anything at all, you have my number. Do not hesitate to call.”

With a wink, Gerri offered a hand to Cyrus. Still transfixed, Cyrus did not take her hand or even seem to notice. Gerri laughed and shrugged, taking her leave. Mila’s eyes followed her, almost begging Gerri not to leave her here with this man.

“Ciao, friends!”

And like that, she was gone. Mila returned her line of sight to the handsome, stoic man in front of her. They were alone.

CYRUS

“Uh, should I follow her? I wasn’t expecting her to leave me here.” Mila’s face was riddled with worry.

He was speechless. He blinked twice, confused. He was still stunned that his fated mate was sitting here in his office. Clearly unsettled, Mila fiddled with her hands. Without any reaction from him and squirming under his intense gaze, she continued talking.

“Is it normal for Ms. Wilder to leave interviewees in your office without any more information? Have you even seen my resume? This is a very strange interview process.”

When he still failed to speak, she started to stand, very plainly uncomfortable at this point. She must not have any idea what was going through Cyrus’s head. Of course, she didn’t understand; she was human. She had no idea about fated mates or the intensity of this moment for him.

Stop her, you idiot, his polar bear chuffed.

Every inch of him wanted to shout at her not to leave, but he caught himself.

“Please, Mila, stay. Take a seat.”

Mila slowly lowered into her seat.

“Regardless of whether you are a good candidate for the position, you are officially here as my guest. Gerri wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Mila frowned.

“Doesn’t that seem strange to you? Why would you offer me your hospitality without even knowing me? We are perfect strangers.”

Cyrus chuckled.

His polar bear growled,Mate …

Cyrus knew full well that regardless of having only just met Mila, the bond was enough to encourage him to keep her here forever. He briefly wondered if he should explain the fated mate scenario to her, but that would make him seem sketchy, and she would definitely head for the hills.

He decided against that course of action and approached the topic from a different angle. Gerri could take the fall for all he cared. Besides, she could handle it. She could talk her way out of anything.

“I apologize for how bizarre the situation may feel. Gerri was intrigued by you. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. It is at her request that I extend my offer to at least permit you a vacation. This is a wonderful location for such.”
