Mila was really uneasy about the last couple of hours. Something felt a little … okay, very… weird about that whole exchange in the office. That should have been a warning sign.

Then, Mila was convinced to stay here, in the billionaire’s house, for an undisclosed amount of time. Why would she agree to that? Highly unusual for a job interview.

Mila could not believe what was happening. She followed Luca closely, not wanting to get lost in the massive house. There were at least a dozen rooms and hallways that went every which way. Who was this guy? Why did he need so much space?

Luca opened a door and gestured into the room. Mila stepped in, feeling like she was in a 4-star hotel, from the grandeur of the bed with its canopy to the fixtures looking to be from an old French castle. She turned to thank Luca.

“Of course, miss. If you need anything, please don’t hesitate to ask.”

She nodded. He closed the door with a small bow, leaving her alone for the first time. Mila couldn’t help but feel like she was a prisoner in this house. She could obviously leave anytime she wanted, but at the same time, she felt like she needed to stay for some reason.

She pulled out her phone and dialed the only person she could think of … Rhoda.

“Hey, sis, what’s up?”

“Rhoda, I did something, and I am unsure what to do about it ….” She hoped that Cyrus’s shifter senses couldn’t hear her in here.

“Oh, God! What happened? Where are you? Are you okay?”

Mila felt such relief at her sister’s voice, knowing Rhoda was always in her corner. She let out a sigh before she explained the whole story.

“Okay, so I am doing my usual flight stuff, and I tell you, this flight was the worst. I was exhausted, just holding it together and making it through. I was just finishing the offboarding process when this stylish woman came up to me.”

“She had been sitting in first class, so I plastered my smile back on. She had the strangest proposition for me. She asked me if I wanted to apply for a position as an assistant for a billionaire shifter, essentially being a personal flight attendant.”

“Then she made a comment about dating a shifter or dating my boss, which was really strange, but I ignored it. She invited me out to Ashland, Oregon. I had some time off, so I figured it was worth looking into.”

“Next thing I know, I am walking up to this giant mansion with this woman I had just met to talk to a billionaire I had never met about being his assistant. When I walked in, he was just staring at me with his eyes boring into my soul.”

“While that made it slightly weird, it was not uncomfortable for some reason. It’s almost like I am drawn to him in some bizarre way, and even though I feel like a bug under a microscope, I don’t want to leave.”

“So now, I am here, staying in his guest room that looks like the effing Ritz, and I am really not sure what to do. I’m kinda freaking out here.”

Mila was out of breath from her long-winded speech, and she waited for her sister to respond while she gasped for air. There was a long pause on the other side of the phone.

“Damn, girl.”

“Is that all you have to say?” Mila whined, exasperated.

“I think you’re overthinking it, just like you always do. Your so-called problem sounds like a dream come true. A rich tech giant wants you to stay in his house and get to know you on a deeply personal level. Boo-hoo.”

Mila could just see Rhoda rolling her eyes, and it made her smile.

“So, you are really at his house? Like Cyrus Bechtel, the billionaire?” Rhoda continued with excited fascination.

“I mean, I think so. He looks like the pictures I found online and this mansion … Rhoda, you should see this damn mansion. There has to be enough room for our entire extended family to live here. And the baroque style is like I just stepped out of a French chateau. It is definitely grand enough for a billionaire.”

“Well, just enjoy it, sis. Sounds like a romance novel in the making. It’s not the kind of opportunity that presents itself all the time.”

Mila let out a sigh. Rhoda was right again.

“So, he wants to get to know me, he said. He said being comfortable with each other was a qualification for the job ….”

“Uh-huh. Sounds like you need to decide if you are willing to sleep with your boss.”

“What! Uh, that would be a no. Not sleeping with my boss. No matter how hot he is.”

“He is. I just looked him up. Like daaamn. Hey, if this job pays well and you can leave your other job, it may just be worth taking it on.”
