She continued to chat casually about what life was like growing up with all those people in the house, and Cyrus was hanging on her every word. It seemed like the more information he had about her, the deeper in love he fell.

“Tell me more about where you grew up.”

Mila sighed.

“Is everything okay?” Cyrus’s voice cracked with worry.

“Oh, yes, fine. We grew up in an average-sized town in Fremont, Nebraska, but as I mentioned, we weren’t exactly wealthy. Dad was a supervisor for WholeStone Farms, so he brought in enough money to keep us all fed.”

“We were all taught from a young age that it was important to make your own path and to seek out what made you unique. Maybe being stuck in a smaller town in the middle of nowhere sparked my wanderlust.”

“It just so happened that I was good with people, possibly due to my large family. My brothers Tommen and Rowan seemed content in Nebraska, but I was not. Cian and Kayra are still in college, so they are still figuring out what their niche is.”

“And your other sister?” Cyrus asked.

“She, like myself, moves around a lot. She is my inspiration for taking chances. She was the type to sneak out and tip cows.” He made a face. She laughed. “Yes, we tipped cows in Nebraska.” They both laughed.

She talked about her town and what adventures she, her siblings, and her friends would indulge in. There’s not much to do in a small Nebraska town, but they were inventive and adventurous.

Cyrus was impressed with her ability to hold her own. She was definitely full of spirit and soul for such a small woman. Maybe that was why Gerri noticed her, as she almost reflected the same qualities as Gerri herself, minus the ultra-confidence.

He loved the idea that Mila had such a loving and supportive background and was very curious to meet this family someday. He wished there was a way to tell her that without her being completely weirded out.

As she talked about her family, she gesticulated with her free hand and bobbed her head in excitement. He could watch her talk all day. He wanted to. It bordered onneeding to. She was so full of wonder and life.

Then her question crashed into him.

SEVEN

MILA

Mila definitely felt at odds with everything that was going on, and she wondered how this spa day was going to play into all of it. She didn’t really have the privilege of having spa days, but she knew from movies and shows that women walked around clad only in robes.

She wondered briefly if Cyrus just wanted her out of her clothes. The idea excited her. Not just being exposed to him but that it was such a public place. She shivered with excitement.

She stole a glance at him on the car ride over and wondered what was going on in his head. He turned to her with a gentle smile. “We are almost there, and I have a surprise for you.”

Her heart was beating practically out of her chest. She had no idea why this man had such an effect on her. She felt lightheaded thinking about what kind of surprise he might have in mind.

The car pulled directly in front of the spa, and he got out first, walking around to let her out of the car. He even offered a hand to help her. She felt out of place walking into the spa in jeans and a T-shirt, but she didn’t have anything else to wear.

At the reception desk, he placed his hand on her lower back and guided her in front of him.

“This is my very special guest, Mila, and I would like you to make sure she has the most relaxing experience possible.” The attendants nodded and looked at Mila. Cyrus also turned to her.

“I have ordered you a full spa experience. There will be a manicure and pedicure as well as a facial and hairstyle, and then we will both have massages.” Her eyes widened before he continued. “In separate rooms.” He ended with a smile.

Heat burned in her cheeks as she looked at the floor. “Thank you.”

“Right this way, miss.”

“See you on the other side, my dear.” Cyrus gave her a wink. It was odd to know that someone was half-animal, and yet, he didn’t seem so threatening when he did things like that.

Mila was led into the locker room, where she was introduced to the amenities of the spa. The attendant informed her that a hot tub, sauna, steam room, and a cold plunge were available, in addition to normal locker room amenities like the showers.

She was apparently allowed to make use of any and all of these for the full course of the day. She felt very small and out of place as the attendant led her to her locker and showed her how to unlock it. Inside were her robe and spa sandals.

“If you have no further questions, miss, I will leave you to undress.”
