She snapped out of her thoughts and realized she was still standing in the middle of the entryway. Suddenly embarrassed by her private thoughts, she hurried down the long hallway to her guest room.

Once safely locked away inside, she flopped face-first onto the bed. What an ending to a perfect day, she thought sullenly.

TEN

CYRUS

Mila looked absolutely devastated when he said he needed to leave. It was enough to break his heart. He hoped never to make her feel like that as long as they both lived. And yet, here they were before they had even started to be athem.

Mila was about to give herself to Cyrus. She was ready to take a step that Cyrus never expected to make. His dreams were coming true in front of him, and Luca pulled him away.

“What in fuck’s sake could be so important? I told you I was busy today and to not bother me.”

Cyrus couldn’t keep his anger in. Professionalism be damned. Luca was unfazed and quietly handed Cyrus a piece of paper. Cyrus looked down at the information, and his eyes widened. His head panned back up slowly, and Luca smiled gently, nodding.

Cyrus had been searching for this information for years; this man had been a phantom. He could very well have been holding the key to the lockbox that has been hiding the truth of his parents’ disappearance.

This ancient person had been elusive, to say the least. He had been well-known for his abilities, but when a person had been in this world longer than any other, they tended to be pretty good at making themselves scarce.

Cyrus placed the international call that he had been looking forward to for longer than he could remember. The man who Cyrus was praying would pick up the other end of this line was another paranormal, the kind who could locate someone at their time of death.

Cyrus needed to know where his parents had ended up after the plane crash. They obviously were not with the plane, which meant they’d survived. Survived and walked away.

Why were they there in the first place? What was in the Arctic? Why would they have left the safety of the plane? Could this information possibly begin to answer the questions that have beaten his brain bloody all these years?

Cyrus’s eyes were squeezed tightly in anticipation of the call. The few seconds of time dragged on into what felt like hours. It may as well have been the sound of Gabriel’s horn when Cyrus heard the click of the other side of the line picking up.

“Hello, sir. I am so thankful that I could get ahold of you. I hope that you will be able to help me.” Cyrus found his voice shaking slightly in expectation.

“You have taken great pains to find me.”

“I have. Would you permit me to explain what I need to know?”

“You need not explain. I am aware.” Cyrus was surprised but not shocked. This man had knowledge past what anyone could have known.

“Can you help me?”

“The thing you seek may not be what you think.”

“Sir?” Cyrus was beginning to be concerned that his faith in this man was unfounded.

“The path is dangerous, and the answer is shrouded.”

“I am not sure I understand.” His leg started to bounce in suspense.

“Follow the ancient Norse gods, seek theanirnittleading to the nothingness. No moreinua. The wind will bluster. The dawn did not come. Beware thetupilaq. He will punish if you stray.”

The line went dead. The frustration began to rise. Cyrus couldn’t make sense of what the ancient man had said. The cryptid lived up to his name, a complete cryptic.

He wasn’t sure if what he said made any sense. He had taken everything down to the best of his ability, but he was going to need to make some calls. Hopefully, his sources would be readily available.

While he had done much research and had a basic understanding of the notions that had been discussed, he needed experts. He needed to know about weather patterns. He needed to find out the correct path to the last known location of the plane.

He started calling all the experts he could. He first called the Kalaallit chief to ask about the traditional Inuit shamanic rituals. He discovered thatanirnittwas the spirit of all living things, but it could be vengeful. The world was full of life in both the traditional and nontraditional sense.

He also learned that all animals, plants, stones, and other natural phenomena possessed what they called aninua. According to the Greenlandic traditions, everything had a soul and was living. It was important to respect and be one with the energies surrounding a person.

Energies could be used in many ways, for both good and evil. The Inuit always tried for the positive, but there was also the possibility of negative energy.
