It was a big place. He tried the handle, it turned easily, and then he flushed. Cyrus was doing the very thing that had upset him in the first place, entering Mila’s private space without her permission.

While it felt uncomfortable, he did want to talk to Mila. And if she wasn’t in her room, then there might be a clue as to where she went. The indoor pool, the solarium, and the hiking trails could all use special clothing or gear.

Cyrus stepped into the room. He looked into the darkness and sniffed. Mila definitely wasn’t there, but her scent lingered. Her rose petal and vanilla aroma danced over the bed, which was not made by his staff … he could tell she did it because it wasn’t tucked up in the way they were trained to.

He sat on her bed and lifted the pillow up to smell it more deeply.

As the traces of Mila wafted into his nose. The familiar pull of the fated connection tugged at his chest.

The vibration wasn’t urgent, but it was a sign that he wanted Mila in his life. For good. Forever. And now.

Cyrus stood and examined the room. He realized her luggage was gone.

He walked into the bathroom and saw that any toiletries she may have brought with her were also not present.

Cyrus went over to the dresser and closet. “Shit.”

Everything was empty. She wasn’t somewhere in the house.

Mila was gone.

Cyrus pulled his cell out and clicked on Gerri’s number. He walked out of the bedroom and closed the door. Gerri picked up after two rings. “Hello, Cyrus. How are things going?”

“Well, Gerri, not well. I made an ass out of myself, and Mila left. I never bothered to get her phone number because we had just met, and she was supposed to be here for the weekend. Would it be completely unreasonable for you to give me her information?”

Gerri chuckled. “I can give you her number. You must have really messed up if she left without telling you where she was going.” Gerri paused. Cyrus could hear fingers pressing buttons and swiping over the phone’s screen. “Did she even tell you she was leaving?”

Cyrus grimaced. “No. I blew up. She said she didn’t want to be mates if that was the way it was, and she left. I haven’t done this serious relationship thing before.”

“Not with anyone high-quality enough for you, and especially not your fated mate. You’ll get the hang of it. If you catch her, that is.”

“What do you mean? You think she’s leaving the area completely?” If so, Cyrus might never be able to find her without a private investigator or technical intervention. Both he wanted to avoid doing. There were only so many boundaries he was willing to cross without coming off as creepy. His polar bear stomped its feet. No! Don’t let that happen! She is ours. Go. Now. Get her.

Cyrus couldn’t agree more.

“Yes. She’s a flight attendant. She has the means and access to flights anywhere. Here, take her number. I’m sure she couldn’t get a flight for at least a few hours. How long has it been since she left?”

“I don’t know. I was only downstairs, cooling down, for maybe twenty minutes.”

“Good, then you probably have enough time.” Gerri recited Mila’s number to him.

“Thanks, Gerri.”

“Let me know if you need me to help persuade Mila. Although I think you’ll win her back with a little sugar and some groveling.”

Cyrus hoped so. After blowing her off last night and the fight today, he wasn’t sure he was shaping up to be the best fated mate. In fact, if it were the other way around, Cyrus would probably have left town as quickly as possible too.

Cyrus called Mila’s number. Unsurprisingly, she didn’t pick up, so he left a voicemail. “Mila, can you please call me? I’m sorry, and I didn’t know what I was doing. I’d like to talk and explain a few things. I want to make it up to you. Call me when you get this message. Please don’t leave.”

Then, Cyrus texted her:

Mila. This is Cyrus. Can we please talk? I need to explain some things to you. Gerri gave me your phone number so we could try to work this out. Can you tell me where you are? I will come to you.

Cyrus was already walking toward his car when he received a message back. It was from Mila. His polar bear roared, and his heart leapt when he saw that she’d responded. It said:

Fine. I’m staying at a hotel until my flight leaves. Meet me here.

He jumped in the car and headed to the hotel.
