He pushed the magic down his right arm. His skin swelled, ballooned, and thrust forward with a jacket of light gray fur that billowed down to his hand and over his shoulder.

The pelt continued over his shoulder blades and down his left arm. Cyrus bent over, placing his large pads onto the rough hotel carpet.

His bear’s fur raced down his spine as his back widened and grew. Cyrus’s sight shifted from down to up and peripherally. The colors in the room changed.

Everything now had a green hue. The scent of Mila’s fear peaked. The smell of the intruder spiked. His odor was salty and musty, and he was almost transformed into his own polar bear.

Cyrus could see the intruder’s animal was smaller. The man hadn’t been taking proper care of his bear. That punched Cyrus’s anger up to eleven. All shifters’ animals should be treated with respect.

They take care of us. We take care of them.

Cyrus’s polar bear chuffed. He stomped his front paw. It shook the floor.

The other bear growled.

Cyrus lunged forward. His head rammed into the other bear. The intruder grunted. Cyrus had gotten him in the rib cage.

The intruder turned and gnashed his teeth, and a low rumble tried to warn Cyrus away.

In response, Cyrus turned his body toward the other bear. He pushed all his weight onto the animal. It pressed back.

Cyrus dug his claws into the carpet. He reared back and threw his weight into the other bear again. This time with more momentum, Cyrus rocked into the shifter so hard that his body fell against the hotel wall.

The drywall was crushed under two tons of weight.

Cyrus tried to bite the polar bear’s neck, but the other shifter snapped at his leg.

The shifter clamped down on Cyrus’s tendon. He shook Cyrus’s arm viciously. Blood sprang free and stained his fur.

Cyrus roared in pain.

Mila screamed over the roar. Cyrus turned back to see Mila curled up on the bed, uncertain of what to do. She was as white as a sheet of paper. Her fingers dug into the fabric of the blanket that was protecting and covering her nakedness.

Her eyes were wide. Her mouth dropped open. It was a perfect circle of shock.

Mila screamed again. “Cyrus! Look out!”

A claw swiped across his nose. A flash of white light and a thump of pain disoriented him. His snout began to drip blood.

Cyrus roared again. This time, in anger.

He will not defeat me.

Cyrus beat his uninjured paw against the ground. He growled and pounced.

He threw both paws into the air and brought them down with all his might.

The other shifter stumbled.

Cyrus saw his chance.

He opened his maw, sharp teeth exposed, and lunged mouth-first into the thick pile of his opponent’s throat.

The shifter tried to slide away, but Cyrus clamped down.

With each pull away, Cyrus’s teeth dug in more.

Cyrus pressed the bear down to the floor. Blood seeped out as Cyrus’s teeth broke the skin. This kind of fight would only end one way.
