No matter what the cost was to him, Cyrus would protect his mate.

He would end this battle in the way he knew he had to end it. If he didn’t, other shifters would come. They would see him as weak. Both he and Mila would be threatened.

He looked at Mila. Then, he looked down at the polar bear pinned to the ground. A grunt escaped his lips.

Under Cyrus’s paw, the bear shifted into human form. Instead of fighting to the death, the intruder seemed to have other plans.

In his human body, the unwelcome visitor scrambled out from under Cyrus. His weight shifted, and the intruder danced around the bear, collecting his clothes.

Cyrus sat back, his body shielding Mila’s.

The man screamed at Cyrus and ducked out of the room.

Cyrus looked back at Mila and scratched his polar bear chin.

As he surveyed the room, he noticed how large his body was in comparison. The room was severely damaged. He would have to compensate the hotel staff and probably the guests who’d heard the polar bear melee.

Cyrus closed his eyes and pictured a vortex calling his polar bear back into himself. The fur melted away, his body shrank to its normal human size, and all the heightened polar bear senses dulled ever so slightly.

In his nude, human form, Cyrus looked at his ankle. It was definitely damaged in the fight, but nothing that wouldn’t heal quickly. He crawled to Mila, who had released the blanket covering her.

He brushed the hair away from her face. “Well. I’m sorry that everything is so hectic.”

Mila wrapped them both in the blanket. “I’m just glad you’re okay.” Tears welled in her eyes. “We are going to have to get your wounds looked at, though.”

Mila’s kindness and willingness to accept who Cyrus was without batting a lash swelled in his heart. His chest ached with love, and his heart broke open.

Then security showed up outside the damaged door. Better late than never, he guessed with a sigh. This was going to be a long afternoon.

SEVENTEEN

MILA

After several hours in the hotel’s security room and a large money transfer from Cyrus’s bank account to the hotel to pay for damages, they were on their way back to the mansion. It was still dark out; the sun wouldn’t rise for some time yet.

The last couple of hours were some of the strangest hours of Mila’s entire life. From finding out about Cyrus’s parents, a huge fight, Cyrus coming after her and explaining everything, mind-blowing sex, and a break-in to her hotel room ending with a huge shifter battle, Mila was beyond shaken.

She watched Cyrus destroy the other guy, a polar bear stained with blood. He had ejected the villain, but she could not get the image out of her mind. She then watched him turn back into a bloody, sliced-up man, strutting around to secure the room.

How is he alive? How is he moving so agilely around my hotel room? Is he not in pain?

Before she realized it, she was shaking and breathing heavily. Cyrus reached over and took her trembling hand. He kissed each knuckle, sending calming waves through her. She could get through this like she got through any flight from hell … with the determination to succeed.

Cyrus parked outside the front door of his home and guided her inside. As if in a trance, she allowed herself to be led up the stairs and into the master bathroom. Cyrus turned on the hot water in the shower and helped her undress. He pulled her under the stream of water with him, and they let the droplets run over them.

They stood there for a good while before either of them said anything. They just held each other. He placed his chin on top of her head, and they rocked lightly back and forth.

“I can’t believe it.” Mila finally spoke.

“What?” He breathed into her hair.

“How can such a small town have such a high crime rate? I mean, the likelihood of my hotel room being broken into …”

“Oh, sweetheart… This town does not have a high crime rate. I have lived here my whole life, remember?”

She looked up at him, her eyes wide, both sad and scared. He kissed her forehead. When she looked him over, she realized that most of his wounds were healed, and he still didn’t seem bothered by the injuries, even under the water.

She softly pushed away from him.
