He shifted quickly and charged the two men, pinning the hotel intruder to the ground. A roar ripped out of Cyrus’s mouth.

Mila screamed Cyrus’s name as a blinding white shot of pain tore through his back. Cyrus fell backward off the man and rolled to see Sheldon rear up before he threw his body weight onto Cyrus.

Sheldon knocked the wind out of him.

The other man shifted.

Cyrus’s mind whirled.

If he didn’t make it out, Mila would be killed.

He had to win.

He let his protectiveness for Mila fuel his rage.

As Cyrus struggled underneath two polar bears. He caught a glimpse of a crack. He rolled over as the two bears pummeled him with their claws.

Cyrus whipped his paw into Sheldon’s snout. Sheldon huffed and shook his head to regain his senses.

Cyrus reached out and wrapped his paw around the crag.

Cyrus slid out from under the intruder and rammed his backside into him.

The intruder fell over.

Cyrus pounced on the intruder and went for his jugular. The copper scent filled his nostrils. Warm blood filled his mouth.

While he was shaking the bear under him. Cyrus felt a swipe over his hip.

Cyrus kept his jaws clamped down on the intruder’s body while kicking his back legs at Sheldon. When the intruder’s body went limp, Cyrus spat out his neck and snuffed out the blood.

Cyrus thundered toward Sheldon and knocked into his shoulder, pushing him to the ground.

Cyrus threw his body weight onto Sheldon, pinned him to the cave floor, and lunged into his throat.

His blood ran into Cyrus’s mouth. It tasted sweet and like justice.

Sheldon’s pulse slowed to a trickle. Then into nothingness. Cyrus didn’t let go for a few minutes after he heard nothing.

Sheldon’s lifeless body remained between Cyrus’s teeth for a few more heavy breaths. Then, Cyrus gave the body one more vicious shake. Feeling the meat of his parents’ murderer between his jaws was gratifying.

He spat Sheldon out of his mouth and shifted. Back in his human form, he looked at Mila, who had relief plastered over her face. He took two steps in her direction, his adrenaline dipped, and the pain from his head and ripped open back slammed into him.

Cyrus fell to his knees.

The last thing he saw was Mila racing toward him.

TWENTY-ONE

MILA

Mila dove behind the rocks Cyrus pointed to.

She watched as he shifted before she could blink her eyes.

Her heart caught in her throat.

The quake of the ground had Mila holding on to any ridges she could find so she wouldn’t fall over.
