I’d barely gotten to sleep when there was a knock on the door of the room where I was staying. I had to admit that this cool treehouse room was a step up from that nasty bungalow I’d been sleeping in. The windows were open, giving a cool breeze, and the fan in here was superior. I was actually not sweating, which was maybe a first for being on this planet.

I got up.

He’d already seen me in my nightgown, after all.

I opened the door. “Everything okay?” I stifled a yawn.

“Sorry to wake you, I just… I shouldn’t take you up there.”

I yawned again. “You’ve said this before.”

“I, uh, I realized this, uh, thiswayI’ve been acting with you, it’s because I forgot to take my suppressant pill. I guess you’re probably fertile or something and it triggered me in some way. I realized it, and I took it, but I read up on it, and if I go up to the pole, my suppressant might not kick in.”

I blinked at him. “I’m not fertile, trust me. I have an implant.”

“Well, whatever,” he said. “It doesn’t matter. The point is, it wouldn’t be right for me to take you up there.”

“You said before if I just signed an affidavit that I wouldn’t care if you lost control and raped me, it would be fine.” I yawned again.Oh, now I’m saying that word like it’s nothing.

His nostrils flared.

I shrugged. “We’re attracted to each other. Right?”

“I’m just off my suppressant. I’d be attracted to anything right now.”

I pressed my lips together. Well, fuck him, too. “I’m just saying…”

“What are you saying?” He looked me over. “You’re saying, you, uh, youwant…” He couldn’t finish the sentence. His voice had gotten very hoarse.

“No one else is going to take me up to the pole. You’re all I have,” I said. “And I’m really willing to do whatever it takes to complete this mission. It’s important. So, I can handle it.”

He touched the tip of one of his antlers, pressing his finger into it in a way that was making me nervous. I was afraid he was going to break the skin, hurt himself, but I guess he could tell that wouldn’t happen. How sharp were the tips of them anyway? “I’ll, uh, I’ll stay in control of myself.”

“That’s a thing you can do?”

He sighed. “Go back to sleep.” He backed away, heading back down the stairs.

“We’re still leaving in the morning then?” I called after him.

“First thing, shei,” he called back.

I shut the door and climbed back into bed. His house was really cool. He was… I liked him. I probably shouldn’t, because he was kind of rude and he was really pushy and he seemed to think he had the right to boss me around. On paper, actually, this guy was not even remotely likable.

Maybe it was just his lack of suppressant?

He was probably giving off some crazy male pheromone thing to make me receptive to his mating advances.

He’d said the thing about how humans pretended we couldn’t smell things, and I couldn’t deny that he smelledgreat.

Maybe this was all just a bunch of chemical stuff that would wear off once his suppressant started working again.

Of course, he’d just said that it might not work if we went up to the pole.

So, that would mean…
