“It never works out,” he said.

“Because you don’t put them first?” I whispered.

He looked back into the fire.

“Why not?” I said.

“You don’t seem to date much either, shei.” He still wasn’t looking at me.

“Well, I don’t have much chance to meet men,” I said. “When I do, I can’t tell them I’m with the resistance.”

“You told me.”

“Yeah, I don’t know why I did that.”

He turned away from the fire, then, capturing my gaze with his own, and we stared into each other’s eyes for too long. Something wordless passed between us.

I was the one who broke it, looking down to shove the remaining bit of meat I was eating into my mouth. I chewed and swallowed. “If I fell in love with someone, I’m sure I’d put them first. Or maybe, maybe if he was with the resistance too, he’d understand, and he wouldn’t ask me to choose.”

“I don’t think so,” said Holston.

“What? Why not?”

“I just think people want to mean something to their partners,” he said. “They want to mean everything.”

“Maybe,” I said. I yawned.

“You tired?”

“I’m not used to that much physical exercise, not like you.”

“Well, you sleep, then. I’ll set an alarm to wake up and make sure the fire’s burning, okay?”

“No, I can help,” I said. “If we need to keep watch or we need to—”

“Shei, I can do this. Sleep.”

I curled up on the ground. As I did, something occurred to me. “Holston?”

“Hmm?”

“Should we talk aboutwhythere was another donen man last night?”

“Who knows about that,” he said. “Maybe some asshole came up here for a cheap thrill.”

“His scent? His scent made you react, so does that mean he’s not on suppressants?”

Nothing from Holston.

I sat up.

He was tending the fire. “Guy’s a fucking idiot if so.”

“But then… if he’s out here, and he’s not on suppressants, and he…” I swallowed. “Is he coming for me too?”

He glanced at me. “Shit,” he muttered.

“Would you have to… fight him?”
