“Well, this is obviously true,” Dahlia said, stroking the back of his head, making the hair at the nape of his neck stand up and lie back down. “But, um, I thinkyou’retoo good to me. That venom, Niles, it’s…fuck.”

“See? You like me for my venom,” he said.

“That’s exactly it,” she said, nodding. “Which is why I spent all that time talking with you about your restaurant in the first place. Because it’s always been about the venom.”

He laughed. He was happy. He was spent. He felt tingly all over.

“Why am I too good to you?”

“Oh, because you keep letting me double-penetrate you. No other woman has ever been so freaking into that.”

“What?Nowyou tell me this. It’s not required?”

He lifted his head, alarmed. “Definitely not. It’s not at all—”

“I’m teasing,” she said. “I’mclearlyteasing.”

He lowered his head with a little huffing noise. “I don’t pressure you, do I? I seem to remember every time we did it, you brought it up, even the first time.”

“No, you don’t pressure me.” She stroked her finger up his spine. “Have you told Will you’re leaving to start your own restaurant?”

“Oh, yeah, because he’s going to take that well,” said Niles.

“True,” she agreed. “When will you tell him?”

“Probably just give him two weeks notice,” said Niles.

“Maybe I can have your job at the sandwich shop.”

“That’s what you want?” He laughed a little.

“I don’t know.” She shrugged. “I mean, I seriously have no idea what I want to do with myself, and I’m graduating school, and it’d be a good fit for both me and Will. I’d get a pay raise and benefits and he wouldn’t have to train anyone. I know the town. I know the shop. I know the workers. It’d be good.”

“Yeah, but you don’t want to do that forever.”

“I guess not,” she said. “At some point, you know, you’ll have a life again.”

“I don’t know about that,” he said. “I figure it takes two years to get the debt paid off. Then I start the next phase of the restaurant, which is to open up the sit-down full-service portion, with waiters and menus and the whole nine yards.”

“So, what? Four years? And then I’ll be twenty-nine, and then we can get married.”

“Oh, we’re getting married?” He laughed into her neck. “I thought we were on hiatus.”

“And then babies,” she said. “It’s kind of good that I’m younger than you, right? Because otherwise, we’d be running out of time like Hiljd.”

He lifted his head again. “This is, like, you’ve given this a lot of thought.”

“I’m making it up right now just off the cuff.”

“Are you my girlfriend again before I start seeding you with my scaly spawn?”

She giggled. “If you want me to be, sure.”

“Yeah?” He was melting.

“Yeah,” she said, pressing her breasts against his bare chest.

They kissed.
