The door opened. “Come in, Niles.” It was Astrid, the nymph, Valdi’s new girlfriend. She smiled at him. “It’s okay.” She was hurriedly dressed and her hair was mussed.

“What did you do this time?” That was Valdi’s deep voice.
Niles whimpered. “Oh, sacred teachings, Valdi, it’s bad.”
Valdemar groaned. “Stay there.” He shut the door again.
On the other side of the door, Niles could hear Astrid’s voice. “Get him to come inside.”
“No, I’m going to take him to the bar and get him drunk and come back. Give me, like, twenty minutes?”
“Go be there for your friend, Valdi,” said Astrid. “I’m really tired, anyway.” A big yawn.
“No, you’re not,” said Valdi.
“I am,” said Astrid. “Go. Have a drink with him. Stay out as long as you want. It’s fine.”
“But—”
“Go.” She was insistent.
The door opened again.
Valdemar was wearing clothing now. “I’m going to kill you, Niles.”
“I’m so sorry,” said Niles. “I’m really sorry. I don’t know why I—”
“It’s fine,” said Astrid. “I have to go get Eloise tomorrow morning anyway.”
“Right.” Valdemar pointed at her. “Because of Kevin’s emergency.”
“Yeah, he’s so emergency-prone,” said Astrid.
“Kevin? Like the lead singer of Sour Suckers, Kevin?” said Niles. “He had an emergency?”
“Let’s go to the Meck,” said Valdemar, pushing past him and down the stairs.
Niles slithered down the stairs behind him.
At the door, Valdemar stopped and fixed him with a glare. “What happened?”
“I had sex with an employee.”
Valdemar’s eyebrows shot up.
“In the kitchen. In exchange for giving her time off work.”
“What?”
“Iknow. And I double-penetrated her.”
Valdemar pushed the door open, rolling his eyes. “There you go again with the need to point out, at every opportunity, that you have more than one cock.”
