Hadley sucks in a sharp breath and looks at me like I’ve grown two heads—because apparently, not giving two fucks about prom is unheard of.

“What am I supposed to do then?” she asks.

“I don’t see how that is my problem.”

“You can’t be serious? I mean, come on, Logan. We have been seeing each other for a while and I just assumed—”

“You assumed what?” I interject. “That I would be your date? I told you from the start that there was nothing between us and that hasn’t changed. We aren’t together, and if I do decide to go to prom, it won’t be with you.”

“So who are you going with then, huh?” She folds her arms across her chest. “Don’t tell me you are holding out for Ava? She will be going with Mason. That ship has sailed, Logan.”

My jaw clenches. “It’s still fucking docked as far as I’m concerned.”

“I guarantee you the rope has been cut,” she scoffs. “Mason made sure of that.”

“What?” I frown in confusion, and her eyes widen. She snaps her mouth shut and averts her gaze, looking around the hall nervously. “What did you mean by that?”

“No-nothing,” she stammers, shaking her head.

I step toward her “Hadley. What did you mean by Mason making sure of it?”

She takes a step back, shaking her head again. “It’s nothing. Look, I have to go. Just think about prom, okay?”

She glances at me briefly before turning on her heel and scurrying off down the hall; the sudden change in her demeanor is leaving me in a state of confusion and bringing forth an uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach.

As I enterthe bathroom before class, Hadley’s words play over and over again in my mind like a broken record, that apparent slip of her tongue making my head spin in an effort to make some sense out of what she meant by it.

What did she mean by Mason making sure of it?

He may have swooped in and staked his claim on Ava as soon as we broke up, but I’m still not convinced that what they have is set in stone. In all the years we have attended the same school, I have never seen Ava and Mason talk. I don’t think she even knew he existed until we broke up.

The childhood bond that has bound Ava and me together for as long as I can remember is incomparable to what they have. There is no way he could compete with our history or the moments we shared.

Seeds of doubt start plaguing my mind as that uneasy feeling continues to gnaw at my insides. Perhaps it’s paranoia or maybe even intuition, but I have a gut feeling that I’m missing something.

She’s moved on pretty fast and seems genuinely happy. Was something going on between them before we broke up? That is something I just can’t fathom. One thing about Ava that I am sure of is that she is loyal. She always has been. It’s how she was built.

Finishing up my business,I open the bathroom door and step out into the hall, freezing on the spot when I see Lily Bennett waiting for me. I cock my eyebrow at her in question, wondering why the hell she is just standing there staring at me like some creeper.

“What’s up, Lily?”

“We need to talk.”

“About what exactly?” I fold my arms across my chest, my patience already wearing thin.

“I have some information that I think you may find very interesting.”

“Really?” I ask, somewhat intrigued. “Well, let’s hear it.”

Her eyes dart around the hall quickly before meeting mine. “Not here.”

“Why?”

“We need to talk in private.”

Checking the time on my watch, I blow out an irritated breath, realizing I’m now running late for class. For fuck’s sake, I don’t have time for this shit.

“Just spit it out, Lily. I’m already going to get my ass kicked for being late as it is.”
