James wraps his arm around her, gently steering her away, and panic flashes across Grayson’s face as he watches them walk away.

“Cadence!” he yells. “If you leave with him, we are finished.”

She turns to face him, eyes brimming with tears. “We never even started.”

His face drops, and she wipes away a tear, turning her back on him.

“Cadence,” I call out, following after her, and she turns to face me. “Let me go find Mason, and we will come with you.”

“No.” She shakes her head. “You guys stay. I will drop your car off tomorrow, okay?”

“No, I’m not staying—” I start to protest.

“Ava, please.” Her eyes plead with mine. “I just want to be alone right now, okay?”

I take her hand and give it a squeeze. “Are you sure?”

She nods her head in response.

“I will call you in the morning, okay?”

“Okay.” Wrapping her arm around James, they both leave the room, and I spare a glance at Grayson whose chest is heaving like he is getting ready to explode any minute.

And then he does.

“God fucking dammit!” he roars, picking up a pool cue and smashing it against the dartboard. The pool cue snaps in half as it connects with the board and sends it crashing to the floor.

Nate comes rushing into the room, eyes bulging out of the sockets when he spots the damage. “What the hell, man? My dad is going to kill me.”

As they argue back and forth, I head back to the living room in search of Mason. Pushing through the sea of bodies gyrating on the dance floor, I scan the room and notice he is no longer by the back wall. Instead, I spot Lily lounging on the sofa and watching me with a smug grin.

Fuck, that girl is a weirdo.

Ignoring her creepy vibe, I turn my back on her and leave the room.

I continue my search through the entire downstairs area of the home and the backyard, but Mason is nowhere in sight.

Where is he? He didn’t leave, did he?

Heading out front and spotting his truck still parked in the street, I pull out my phone and dial his number, listening to it ring several times before going to voice mail. I send him a text, then look up, noticing a light on in one of the upstairs bedrooms and realizing I haven’t checked up there yet; I make my way back inside.

Logan appears as I enter the foyer, stopping me before reaching the stairs. “Ava.”

“What, Logan?” I puff out an agitated breath.

“I need to talk to you.”

“Now really isn’t the time. I need to go and find Mason.” I move to walk away but am stopped suddenly when he grabs my arm and spins me around. “Let me go.”

“Listen to me,” he insists, tightening his grip and refusing to let go. “He is not who you think he is.”

I frown up at him. “What are you talking about?”

He releases my arm and runs his hands over his face, inhaling a deep breath. “I don’t know how to tell you this.”

My brows furrow deeper. “What?”

“It was all a game, Ava.” He looks down at me apologetically. “We were both set up.”
