Hadley… and Lily.

Talking to Hadley.

Asking her where Ava was.

Hadley straddling my lap.

Then nothing.

Shifting to try and move her off me, she lets out a grunt of protest before looking up at me. “Good morning,” Hadley rasps.

Lifting herself off my chest, she rolls onto her back, and the sight of her large breasts coming into view makes my eyelids blink rapidly. It’s then that I realize she is naked, and glancing down at my frame, I notice that I’m naked too.

Panic instantly takes hold, and I jump out of bed, the sudden movement sending a blinding pain shooting through my skull. “What?—” I say, looking around the room in confusion, my mind racing with a million questions. Stepping back, I feel something crinkle under my foot and lift it up to see a condom wrapper stuck to my sole.

My eyes dart to Hadley’s naked body, wrapped in a sheet on the bed, and realization punches me straight in the gut. “No! No No No No No… we didn’t.” Shaking my head in disbelief, I grip my hair as my chest tightens to the point of making it hard to breathe. No fucking way. This didn’t happen. It can’t have. My mouth opens and closes, struggling to find the words while Hadley watches me with a pensive expression.

“Did we?” I finally manage to ask, and watching her head nod, my heart plummets into my gut. “Why?… How?”

Hadley averts her gaze and gives me nothing more than a shrug. I spot my clothes on the floor and rush over, making quick work of throwing them on. A wave of nausea hits me again, and I stop for a moment, trying to calm my raging stomach before finding my shoes and slipping them on.

I dig my keys out of my pocket and bolt straight for the door “Mason,” Hadley calls out, the crack in her voice stopping me suddenly, and I turn around. Her pale face stares back at me, deep-seated regret etched all over her features. “I’m really sorry.”

Getting into my truck,I grab the bottle of water on the seat next to me and guzzle it down, almost moaning in relief as the cool liquid quenches my dying thirst. Pulling out my phone, I notice Ava’s missed call and text and immediately dial her number. It goes straight to voice mail, so I send her a text then start the truck, quickly pulling out onto the street and heading in the direction of her house.

My mind runs through the events from last night, trying to piece together the puzzle of what actually happened. After Chelsea dragged Ava away, I didn’t see her again. And that so-calledtalkLily insisted on having—which I assumed would be her telling me about all the ways she intended on destroying my life—was nothing more than a pointless discussion about finals. Hadley appeared not long after to join in the conversation, and after that, everything was a blur.

How I ended up in that room with Hadley is a goddamn mystery. The visions of me walking up there and her climbing onto my lap fade in and out before everything goes black. Fuck! There is no way I would sleep with her. I have no interest in Hadley Miller whatsoever, and there is not a single soul on this earth that would convince me to cheat on Ava.

Ava.

Fuck.

What did she see last night? She left me behind, so she must have seen something. The thought of her walking in and seeing me with Hadley makes my stomach twist so violently it physically hurts, spurring on that nausea I’ve been keeping at bay. This can’t be happening. Tugging at my hair in frustration, I continue to sift through my short-circuited brain, hoping to find some form of proof that Hadley’s admission that we had sex is a bullshit lie. But as it stands, all I have to go by is that she said we did.

I’m completely fucked.

Pulling into Ava’s driveway,I shut my truck off and race to the front door. After ringing the doorbell several times with no response, I start pounding the door so hard, the hinges vibrate under my assault and echo into the foyer inside.

The tapping of footsteps approaches, and I brace myself for whoever will open the door. I don’t give a shit if I have to deal with the wrath of her mother right now. Nothing is going to stop me from seeing Ava. But what I’m actually going to say, I don’t have a fucking clue.

That single strand of hope I barely had in my grasp slips from my fingers when those ice-cold eyes meet mine. Her usual radiant skin is void of all color, and the light in her eyes is dimmed by the pit of darkness surrounding them. But even in her disheveled state, she is still the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

Stepping outside, she closes the door and folds her arms across her chest. Without saying a word, I already know that she knows. The look on her face says it all, and I fight the urge to wrap my arms around her, begging for forgiveness with everything that I am. That time will come, but I need to let her set the pace right now.

“Is it true?” she asks after what feels like an eternity, the detachment in her tone causing my eyes to burn.

“Baby—”

“Don’t call me that,” she immediately snaps back.

“I-I don’t know what happened,” I confess. It’s the truth, and right now, it’s all I’ve got.

“Just…” she stammers, her chin trembling as she struggles to maintain composure. “Just tell me the truth. Did you and Hadley work together to break Logan and me up?”

“Ava—”

“Tell me the truth!” she cries.
