He crossed a line there is no coming back from.

It’s over.

I feel the weight of that realization crush my chest. Not only have I lost my boyfriend, but one of my closest friends. I have lost someone who was like family to me. I brace myself and ask the only question that pops out of my scrambled mind “Why?”

“Baby. I’m so sorry. I’m so goddamn sorry. You don’t understand—”

“Understand what?” I croak. “Just tell me why? Do you have feelings for her?”

“NO!” he cries, taking a step toward me, and I hold up my hand, signaling him not to come any closer. “She means nothing to me, I swear. She was just a bit of fun on the side.”

“Just a bit of fun on the side?” I ask with a frown. “What do you mean? Have you—” His posture stiffens as he casts his gaze downward, and the realization hits me with force so strong it feels as though my entire world is falling out from under me. “This wasn’t the first time, was it?”

Closing his eyes, he pinches the bridge of his nose and takes a shallow breath. “No, it wasn’t the first time.”

“How long?” I choke out, feeling my throat tighten. Opening his eyes, he stares back at me with deep-seated guilt and remains silent.

“For fuck’s sake, Logan!” I scream, tears streaming down my face again. “Tell me how long this has been going on!”

“Six months,” he replies in a low voice, and I wrap my arms around my stomach, the pain so unbearable I fight back the urge to vomit. Looking down the street, I notice a car approaching us in the distance, its headlights getting closer, and Logan slowly moves toward me.

“Baby… I’m so sorry, I fucked up, okay? It’s not what you think. I…”

“Don’t you ever call me baby again!” I scream, pointing at him and taking a step back to each one he takes forward. “You lost that privilege the moment you stuck your dick in that whore!”

He grimaces and stops in his tracks just as the approaching car pulls up alongside us.

It’s Lyndsey.

She rolls down the passenger window and pins Logan with a murderous glare before shifting her gaze to me. “Get in, babe, let’s get out of here.” She motions for me to get in the car.

“She’s not going anywhere,” Logan yells at her. “I’m still talking to her.”

“Go to hell, Logan. You have seriously fucked up, and she needs to be away from you.”

“Don’t tell me what she needs!”

“Well, she sure as hell did not need or deserve to walk in on you with Hadley fucking Miller!” she fires back then signals for me to get in the car again. “Ava, get in the car.”

Logan breathes heavily through his nose, his eyes darting back and forth between Lyndsey and me. Turning away from him, I walk toward the car and hear his footsteps stumbling behind me as he follows.

“Ava, please,” he begs. “I’m so sorry. I will fix this, I promise.”

I get in the car and slam the door. Cadence and Chelsea are sitting silently in the back. Lyndsey gives me a sympathetic look and I turn away.

I hate when people look at me in pity.

“How did you know?” I ask her.

“Eric found me and told me,” she replies, and I nod my head, swallowing down the stubborn as fuck lump in my throat. Logan stands outside my window, but I refuse to look at him, instead choosing to focus on the road in front of me as Lyndsey shifts the car into gear. “Let’s get out of here.”

ChapterTwo

AVA

The high-pitched shrill of my alarm clock jolts my eyes open just as I am about to doze off again, and letting out a groan, I reach over and hit the off button—finally accepting defeat after an all-out twenty-minute war with the snooze button.

Rolling onto my back, I run my hands over my face and release a heavy sigh. Spring break is over, and it’s the first day back at school. To say I’m dreading it would be an understatement. I honestly don’t want to go. In fact, a trip to the dentist sounds more appealing than having to deal with Logan and the gossip mill at school right now.
