“Fuck that,” Nate huffs.

“Wimp,” Eric fires back with a challenging smirk, and Nate narrows his eyes.

“I’m not a wimp because I don’t want to wax my balls.”

“I will give you a hundred bucks to do it, Nate,” Cadence chimes in, grinning like a kid in a candy store.

“Hell. Fucking. No!” Nate snaps. “Quit talking about torturing my balls. Now—” He slaps his hands together, looking at me. “When’s the big rematch, Ava?”

“Rematch?”

“The rematch!” he exclaims. “Between you and Hadley. She said it’s not over, so when are you guys going for round two? We have already placed bets, and my money is on you,Ava-San.” He winks then tucks into his lunch.

“There isn’t going to be a rematch,” I reply flatly.

“Oh, come on!” he grumbles through a mouthful of food. “You have to it’s—”

“Nate, drop it,” Lyndsey cuts in. “She isn’t going back for round two, and you starting a betting pool is just stirring shit. Cut it out.”

“Whatever,” Nate mutters.

Placing my fork down, I give up on the lunch I have been massacring with my endless picking and push away from the table. “I’m going to the library,” I say, standing up.

“Going to see Mason?” Eric asks.

I nod my head. “He needs help with integral equations, so I offered to tutor him.”

“And I have no idea what the hell that is but let him know he is welcome to join us at lunch anytime,” Eric says.

“The cafeteria is not really his thing.”

“Fair enough.” He shrugs, and I lean over, kissing him on the cheek, then give everyone a wave.

“Catch you guys later.”

“Ava!”Logan calls out as I’m walking down the hall, and I look over my shoulder to see him jogging to catch up with me. Ignoring him, I continue walking. “Ava, please just stop for a minute,” he says, gripping my shoulder and spinning me around to face him.

“What do you want?”

“I wanted to see if you were okay. You know… after what happened with Hadley?”

My eyebrows rise. “Are you serious right now?”

“What?” he asks, looking perplexed.

“Do you know what we fought about?” I glare at him accusingly, but he continues to stand there looking confused, and I let out a huff. “Go ask your girlfriend.”

As I turn to storm off, he grabs my arm and stops me. “She’s not my girlfriend,” he growls.

“Whatever! I don’t care. Just don’t tell her my business. You had no fucking right to tell her about my mother. You know damn well how bad my homelife is,” I yell, giving his chest a hard shove, but it’s like trying to push a brick wall as he stands firm. “Why? Why of all the people you could have told you toldher? You know we hate each other, and you have given her ammunition to use against me. Did our time together mean nothing to you at all? How could you do this to me?”

Suddenly out of breath from my outburst, I blink back tears as he watches me, his expression pained.

“Ava.” His voice cracks. “Baby, I’m so sorry. I know I shouldn’t have. It was Blake’s birthday—”

“Oh yes, she told me all about your fuckfest on Blake’s birthday,” I bite back bitterly. “It’s great to know that my problems were a topic of discussion for your pillow talk.”

“It wasn’t like that.”
