The stress that once marked her beautiful face has vanished. She laughs and smiles all the time now. She showers me with affection constantly, and we have literally become inseparable.
Ava is convinced that Logan has finally moved on. And as much as I wish I could agree with her, I haven’t missed the constant stream of daggers he has been throwing in our direction. I’m not convinced this is over, and I have a feeling that this break in the storm is nothing more than him taking the time to plan his next move.
Maybe it’s paranoia, and I’m hoping to God it is, but just in case, I’m going to keep my wits about me. We only have four weeks left of school. I just have to ride this out, and once we graduate, we will finally be free.
Ava releases a deep breath, her beautiful face smiling back at me as we lie side by side on my bed, our legs still entangled from spending the last hour wrestling on my bed.
“Prom is in three weeks,” she hints, looking at me expectantly.
“Uh-huh.” I yawn, feigning disinterest, and she narrows her eyes. I’m going to ask her; I just love teasing her.
“So?” she demands.
I arch my brow. “So what?”
“Mason!” she cries, slapping my arm.
“Sorry, baby.” I chuckle, sitting up on my elbow and resting my head on my palm, smiling down at her. “Of course I want to take you to prom.” She raises her eyebrows, waiting for me to ask. “Ava Richards, will you go to prom with me?”
“I don’t think I want to go with you anymore,” she retorts, lifting her chin and looking away.
“Is that so?” I dig my fingers into her sides, and she squirms, trying to get away, but I crawl on top of her, grabbing both her wrists and pinning them above her head.
“Yep,” she replies defiantly. “I’ve changed my mind.”
“I think I can convince you to reconsider,” I purr, nipping her bottom lip.
“Not a chance, Superman.” She shakes her head. “You blew it!”
“That’s it. It’s tickle torture time,” I growl, placing both her wrists in one hand as I use the other to tickle her. She screams and starts writhing beneath me. “Say yes!” I demand.
“Never!” she cries out, laughing.
Someone coughs from behind us, and I turn to see Lily standing at the foot of my bed watching us. Letting go of Ava, I shift off of her and sit up. “Lily? What are you doing here?”
She looks at Ava deadpan before shifting her gaze to me. “We need to talk.”
Ava sits up and frowns as she looks back and forth between us, the tension in the air becoming thick.
“Alone,” she demands, and Ava’s head jolts back slightly as Lily’s eyes set upon her again. Ava glares back before turning to me and letting out a resigned sigh.
“I promised Nix I would teach him to do a cartwheel,” she says softly. “I will go find him and leave you two to talk.” She leans over and gives me a quick kiss on the lips, then hops off the bed, giving Lily a brief look before leaving the room.
I get up off the bed and face Lily head-on, my jaw ticcing as I glower at her. “What the fuck is your problem?”
“You haven’t been returning my texts. I told you we needed to talk.”
She’s right. I haven’t returned the twenty text messages she has sent me every day. And that’s because I have nothing to say to her. She not only broke my trust, but she has an issue with Ava. Therefore, she has an issue with me.
“That doesn’t give you the right to barge into my room and kick my girlfriend out.”
“Girlfriend?” She lets out a disgusted snort. “For how long, Mason? Does she know your little secret?”
My stomach rolls as she pins me with a knowing look, and the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. “What are you talking about, Lily?” I utter in a low voice.
“Oh, you know exactly what I am talking about.” She folds her arms across her chest, giving me a smirk. “But seeing as you are going to play this as if I don’t know what you have done, I will spell it out for you. I know all about the little game you and Hadley played to break Logan and Ava up.”
A weight bears down on my chest, hindering my ability to take a proper breath, and the walls around me suddenly close in.
