“Get up. We’re going for a ride.”

“D!”

“Get the fuck up!’ he barks, whipping out his gun, pointing it at me. “I’m not playing games with you, T. I’ve given you too much freedom. I’ve been too fucking nice. You’ve gotten too fucking comfortable. Now you’re doing grimy shit. You can’t be trusted anymore. So you don’t got a use. Z will be my new girl.”

“You’re fucking wrong, D! None of that shit is true! Calm down, and let’s talk about this—”

“No more talking.” He grabs me roughly by the upper arm and walks me toward the door. “You really thought you’d take me out. Guess what, T? I’m taking you out first.”

Big D shovesme into the passenger seat of his SUV. For the entire walk from the hotel room to the lobby he gripped me by the arm, pinching my skin between his thumb and index finger. A silent but deadly warning—shut the fuck up, don’t dare make a scene.

He slams the car door, narrowly missing my foot. I hurry to tuck myself inside or risk losing a limb. The way he’s acting, he’d probably grunt out a laugh and say it’s karma for being a ‘snake’.

I have no clue what the hell he’s even salty about.

He claims I was plotting to take him out, but not once has that ever been a thought. Though as I buckle my seat belt and he smashes his foot on the gas, I realize it should’ve been.

Whyhaven’tI tried to have him taken out?

Louis would’ve done it in a heartbeat.

But he would’ve wanted to know why. I would’ve had to come clean.

Tell him everything. All about how indebted I was. How I’m basically owned by Big D and have been since I before I could even legally open my own bank account. Before I could even legally drive acar.

D’s owned me for more of my life than he hasn’t. A sad, depressing fact I try not to think about often.

I didn’t avoid telling Louis only because it’s a part of my life I prefer keeping hidden. I didn’t tell him because it’s my shit.

My mess.

I’ve always solved my messes on my own. I’ve always solved other people’s messes—Mom’s most of all—on my own too.

The last thing I wanted was getting him involved when Big D is dangerous. Louis has the backing of the most powerful mafia family in the country, but in a one-on-one confrontation if it came down to it?

I don’t want his blood on my hands…

Big D jerks the wheel and cuts off the cars in the lane to our left. He runs a red light, speeding through several seconds too late. I swear under my breath and squeeze the overhead handle with fear beating inside my chest.

He’s driving like a fucking lunatic. Probably on purpose to scare me.

“Where are we going?”

“You’ll find out when you find out.”

“Keep running red lights and see what happens. The cops in Vegas don’t play about traffic violations. They’ll pull your ass right—OW!”

Big D’s clenching his teeth, gripping the wheel, as he reaches out for my thigh and pinches the hell out of my bare skin.

Hard and unforgiving, with everything he’s got.

I’d jump up if my seatbelt wasn’t strapping me down to the seat. My hands fall into my lap to tug down the hem of my shorts and cover myself as much as possible.
