Pricilla

When I came to, I heard beeping and my eyes opened to take in the bed I laid in. Nausea washed over me and I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. Opening my eyes again, I saw Frank sitting in a chair beside my bed. His head leaned against the rail that protected me from falling out.

“Frank?” My voice came out hoarse and scratchy.

He looked up at me, his eyes full of tears.

I reached up and wiped his tears away.

“I was so worried about you.”

“Am I okay?”

“You came out of the fight with a few scratches.” He nodded, holding my hand. “You have a broken rib and stitches.”

“Did I land any hits?”

“My beautiful brave kitty. You landed quite a few.” He sniffled. “Well, I guess not mine.” He let go of my hand and stood. “I’ll let you rest.” Tears fell down his cheeks, and he left before I could say anything more.

In his place, my mom came in with Captain McGregor.

My mom hugged me tight and held my hand as I told the Captain everything that had happened that fateful day under the waterfall and then that very evening. I learned that after Tammy had taken over the Pride, many were not happy with her.

He let me know they arrested her, and after contacting the wizard, there would be a vote back home for the next king of the jungle. Unless I wanted it.

“No. I don’t want it.” My hand went to my stomach, which felt like butterflies were flying around.

Glancing around the room, I watched as the captain left and my mother sat down. “Have you talked to Frank?”

“He told me about my injuries, but then he left.” Tears fell down my cheeks.

“Pricilla? What is going on?” She held out a tissue box.

“He lied to me the last time we were at work. And he’s planning on building a new house to get away from me.” I blew my nose, wincing from the pain in my body. “Did they give me anything for pain? This really hurts.”

“They can’t give you anything.” She shook her head. “It’s not good for the baby.”

“Oh.” I threw my head back. “Well, this sucks.”

“Did you talk to him about the house? And about the lie?”

I turned and looked at her. “No.”

She held up her hands. “First. Who told you about the house?”

“Two of the seamstresses that work with Ralph.”

“Uh-huh.” She gave me that mom look. The one that says you’ve been a moron without telling you. “And you didn’t think to consider the source and ask him?”

I look down at my lap.Shit. I’m a moron.

My hand drifted to my belly, and I stroked it softly.

It’s not good for the baby.

“Mom!” I yelled out.

“What?” she yelled back.
