“I don’t think the rain is going to stop anytime soon. You might as well stay here for the night,” he said to her. She didn’t want to look at him or even respond so she kept staring out of the window.

Aurora felt she was going to snap at him if he kept talking to her. She didn’t know if it was the frustration of her job-hunt or her attraction towards him coupled with his behavior that was making her so mad. There was silence for a few minutes between them.

“I’m sorry. It was rude of me to talk to you like that.”

Aurora’s anger was replaced with surprise. Unwillingly, she turned to look at him. In the dark, he looked handsome. Not to mention super hot. She noticed his hair was a little wet and so was his shirt.

Ignoring his apology, she replied, “You should change.”

“Yeah, I guess. I’ll be right back” He looked down at the gray shirt he was wearing. He started moving towards the staircase but then turned towards her again.

“Thank you for coming down here.” With that, he was gone. She watched him as he climbed the stairs and vanished into the dark.

Letting out an exasperated sigh, Aurora made her way to the kitchen and poured herself a glass of water. The clouds thundered outside as she sipped on the water.

Aurora had always loved storms and, the rain in particular. The sound of heavy rain pattering on the windows made her feel warm on the inside and was best for creative working moments. There was some sort of magic that existed in thunderstorms especially the lightning and thunder bursts. But tonight, she couldn’t enjoy it. She was out of place and uncomfortable, stuck with Aiden for the night. She had no idea when the rain would stop and would be able to head home or if she would have to spend the night here.

Aiden came back in ten minutes, freshly changed into a t-shirt and sweatpants. She resisted the urge to look him up and down like a total perve.

“Do you want me to whip something up for dinner? It seems like you’re going to be here for a while.” Aiden asked, settling on the kitchen stool.

“No, thanks.” She responded, pulling out her phone to avoid him. There was no signal so that meant she couldn’t even call her dad.

“Listen, I know we got off on the wrong foot. I was just worried about Aunt Katie when I rushed here. I think I took it out on you.” She looked at home. His words seemed genuine, his eyes searching hers. Aurora felt her anger melting away.

“It’s okay. I’m just waiting for the rain to stop so I can head home.”

“I think the storm is going to last the night. Why don’t we play a game of monopoly to pass time?” Aiden smiled at her. Aurora realized this was the first time she had seen him smile genuinely. His smile was charming. She was sure he had wooed many ladies in New York just with that smile.

Feeling a bit warm and confused on the inside, she agreed. They played three rounds of monopoly in the living room and he beat her in each one. The fireplace lit up the room, giving the room a cozy environment. It was raining cats and dogs outside and you couldn’t see anything in the dark. It looked like she would have to spend the night here. Aurora couldn’t recall the last time there had been such an intense storm like this. As the hours trickled by, she started to enjoy Aiden’s company, the storm also taking its usual affect on her.

“What is your life like in New York?” Aurora asked him after the game had ended.

“Mostly just work. My company handles things for lots of other large corporate accounts.” Aiden was talking more easily with her now. The grumpy man from hours before had seemed to vanish. She quite liked this side of him, relaxed and fun.

“What do you do in your free time?”

“I don’t get much free time. Being the CEO isn’t an easy job.”

“Oh, I see. Do you have any friends in New York?”

“No friends. Just acquaintances.”

“Why don’t you have any friends?” She couldn’t help but ask. He seemed like the lone wolf type though.

“I don’t trust people,” he said, taking a sip of his beer and looking at her.

Aurora felt suddenly conscious of herself. She had quickly put on a cardigan and pants, putting her hair in a bun when she was rushing here. Aurora had never been one for dressing up. Truth be told, she had never really had the reason to, she never exactly got attention from people on her looks. She had green-brown eyes with copper-red hair that were too curly to be managed.

Was she really concerned about how she looked in front of Aiden now?

“Do you?” He asked her, bringing her out of her thoughts.

“No, I suppose I don’t either.”

Aurora wanted to ask Aiden about his ex-girlfriend; if she was the reason he didn’t trust people. But she knew it would ruin his mood. You never knew what triggered Aiden Turner.

Suddenly, Aurora noticed that they were sitting rather close. Much too close to her liking. Their arms were almost brushing against each other. She hadn’t realized when they had both sat down on the same couch. It would be stupid to think there could ever be anything between them no matter how hot he was. And Ethan would kill them both.
