AKONI!

Auryn dragged me onto the temple steps. He snapped at Keon to get his ass through the Gate. The creature was almost on us, and his spears of light were starting to fade with the first. It clacked its bones and groaned at us.

I transformed back into human. “No!”

“Helena.” Auryn, now in human form, whipped me around. “Wecan’t save him. We have to get back. They’regoing to come through the Gate. Do you understand?”

He shook me once.

My brain rattled.

“Yes,” I said softly.

“You have to go last,” he said.

“Yes.”

“Youhaveto go through.”

“Yes.”

Auryn released me and stepped through the Gate.

I looked in the direction Akoni had been taken.

The fourth creature howled and dove for me.

I ducked through the Gate.

Hands caught me.Warm hands. Auryn’s hands.

Sorren knelt next to power core, the hatch open, hand ready to pull.

“Helena,” Auryn said.

The stars rotated, slow and infinite.

A maw snapped through the Gate.

Auryn yanked me back. Soldiers smashed it with spears. It made a sound that made the Gate itself shudder, and disappeared back into starlight.

I flipped into dragon form and shoved ribbons into the Gate’s nexus.

It sliced through the lines.

The muzzle shot back out with the tip of a claw and wing. The Gate’s spinning smashed it and diced it like a bird through a jet engine. Gore splattered the cavern.

The stars flickered.

Disappeared.

The front part of the monster’s maw dropped to the ground at my feet.

I plastered myself against the hot/cold stone.

I’d left him behind.

He wasso far away. My distant ocean, so distant I couldn’t even see the gleam of him on the horizon.
