I flapped back into the sky. Auryn streaked towards the temple, and Akoni met me, breathing hard while his wings singed with effort. Keon, on his back, shouted over the wing flaps and wind, “It’s twenty minute transit to Lemuria, right?”

Chirp!

He glanced down at the soldiers still stepping through. Gates were one-at-a-time-please doors. Still two soldiers to go.

There was no way to prevent the creature from following the last one of us through the Gate.

Auryn came into range, and behind him by five seconds: our newest not-friend.

I ignited the tips of my scales. Time for round two. I streaked into the sky to tear a whole through the cloud layer. Rip, tear, shred, smack, twist, rend.

I plunged back down below to hear that awful ear-ripping, planet-rending howl where all of Homeworld seemed to throw itself backwards and scream. Auryn had the creature seared with light while Akoni dug shrapnel in it. Keon headed up the temple complex while Akoni bellowed at him toget going.

The howl had come from a second creature that had come from the other direction.

“There’s another one!” Keon shouted, pointing in the direction of the incoming monster.

I dove for it.

The second creature dove under me, swerved around, smashed me with its tail, and dove towards Keon.

I unknotted myself and plunged after it with ribbons extended. I caught it,pulled, and sling-shot myself onto it. I wrapped my body around it, gagging and coughing, and bashed it with my tail as hard as I could. It seemed to steam as I clung to it, and the ick and vibrations made my fangs jangle in my skull and try to tear the hole in my brain wider.

Auryn wrestled the first creature under the cloud-hole and summoned spears to pin it to the ground. More blazed and Homeworld screamed. Then I heard something impact metal with acrunch.

I wrestled myself free of creature two, but only because it suddenly stopped fighting me. I squirmed free and it shot off once more to—

Helpcreature three.

A third creature had itself wrapped around Akoni. Akoni roared and ignited his scales into molten heat, baking and searing the monster that had him, but it had no effect.

Auryn shot forward, but the second creature smashed into him, tumbling him into the first creature.

Auryn shook himself off, I dove forward, but the creatures bit into Akoni.

Akoni’s scales snuffed out, and he dropped.

I willed myself to get there. How was it taking so long?

Akoni!

The creatures grabbed Akoni in their claws, and in perfect sync, flapped into the air.

Fuck you! He’s mine, you garbage beasts!

Auryn swept around me and blocked me.

CHIRP CHIRP!What was he doing? We had to go after Akoni!

Auryn’s expression was terrible. “There’s more coming.”

There was at least one more approaching from the south.

CHIRP!

“We have to go!” Auryn muscled me with his wings. “We have to come back for him!”

CHIRP!I flailed as he grabbed me.
