“You could just not tell them anything and look at them like they’re the dumb ones when they clutch the pearls. I’m gonna go, and I’ll think about it. But it’s nice to talk to you again.”

“Helena—”

“I need to think about it.” I cut her off. Shit, I wasn’t trying to be sulky or dramatic, but it wasn’t as simple as she thought it was. “I’ve got to go.”

I hung up and put my phone on the coffee table.

“You haven’t met her father,” Auryn was telling Akoni. “There’s no chance at all he will ever approve of us.”

“Has it occurred to you, drake-of-light, thatnoneof our fathers approve of us? What else is new? Let us have a complete place setting.”

“You really need to stop researching humanity. You make references that are completely inaccurate.”

They stopped talking and turned to me as one.

Auryn asked, “What do you want to do?”

“We don’t even know if we will get permission to go topside,” Akoni told the other two with a twitch of his head, which sent his arrangement of braids and semi-feathers rustling.

“Topside operations ceased, but there isn’t a specific ban on being topside,” Auryn said.

“But there’s the matter of how I get topside. I amnotgoing through K’Dol again. And there’s this.” I pointed at my eyes. My purplish hair I could pass off as a dye job, but my eyes? My family would never, ever believe I’d gotten color-change surgery or was even wearing cosmetic contacts, and if they did believe that, they would immediately blame the guys.

I picked at the fabric of my dress.

Auryn sat down behind me and pressed his chest against my back. “I’m sorry. I know how much your family means to you.”

“What about the elevator shaft in South? Is that usable like the outflow pipes?”

Akoni shook his head.

“I could try teleporting,” I joked weakly.

Auryn’s fingers twitched on my thigh, and Akoni spooked. “No!”

Keon said nothing, which totally meant Keon had thoughts on teleportation.

A thought tickled into my head, which turned into a needle right in the brain. “Wait. I have a land-dragon form. Why can’t I have a water-dragon form?”

“Because that’s not how it works?” Auryn said.

“He has two forms.” I pointed at Akoni. “Why can’t I have three? Do weknowChaos dragons don’t have three forms?”

My natural form of an amphiptere was a squished up mix between a water dragon and a land dragon, so why couldn’t I trade my wings for fins?

Akoni folded his arms. “I am not sure I want to unlock this possibility, if it is legitimate. Water pups are heartbreak, and I do not want to increase the chances of her having a water pup.”

“Then pull out,” Keon muttered.

Akoni whirled around on Keon, but caught himself before he did anything else. Every muscle punched against his skin in sharp relief and veins suddenly bulged and he shook with rage. He tried to say something, but nothing came out except some furious noises.

Keon side-eyed him. “That was cheap. I’m sorry.”

Akoni crossed the space to the couch with big steps and sat down in front of me and grabbed my hands. “Reconsider. If it’s true, you might invoke the possibility of it happening, and there may be risks of you producing water pups, even if I don’t sire them.”

His hands shook as he held me.

Auryn pressed closer. “Akoni, that’s not how form inheritance works. Even if Helenahasa water form, it is impossible for her to pass that on herself, just like you can’t pass on your land form. She will pass on human or amphiptere.”
