Keon coughed and Dekka’s brow reached legendary heights ofI know you did exactly what I told you not to do.

“You also didn’t reveal anything to her she did not already know, or she and I have not already discussed.” Dekka ground it in a bit more.

“Would you miss me if I was gone, Dekka?” Because it sure sounded like Dekka was starting to like me…

Mahon pointed at the stairs. “Go to your room.”

Or maybe not…

“I had not consideredPetrarchyan and Helena are closely aligned,” Akoni said. “Is what Dekka said possible?”

He directed this question at Keon. Keon shifted his thick shoulders while rubbing his thumb across his lips. “I need to think about it. I don’t know Petrarchyan very well, and the actual nature of the Wyrm Ethereals isn’t terribly well understood aside from Dekka.”

Auryn slipped off to the little used study without a word. Maybe I should have followed him, because if Keon was about to start speculating, little chaotic ears overhearing things and all…

And I didn’t want to think about how I’d killed a bunch of plants with my void-scales.

I changed the subject. “I’m going to try to get the details from my family on what this reunion situation is this year.”

Huge family gatherings in my family were kind of the norm. My dad was the middle of three, my mom was third of four. My grandparents on both sides were still alive. My older sister had two kids. My cousins had their own kids. All told, the big party was about forty people, with thirteen of those being kids under twelve.

Not exactly primeambush Helena and hold her hostageterritory.

On the other hand, I had my consorts, and I wasn’t going to pretend I didn’t. ItwasNorth Carolina, though. Couldn’t guarantee my harem wouldn’t get a few sideways looks. Dad was hosting, though, and Dad and Mom had less than zero patience for people who started to make noises about what consenting adults did or started bleating about what some religious text mentioned. Dad would take said religious text and start beating someone around the head while unleashing all his Sunday school trauma and extreme hatred of organized religion on whatever poor soul tried to argue with him.

Come to think of it, that circus wasalwaysentertaining.

“You guys know that if wedoget to go, that we’re going to get some looks, right?” I asked.

“You mean like the looks we get here where everyone wants to know what we do in private?” Akoni inquired, with a gleam in his eye. “Or which one of us you secretly like most, because surely you must like one of our cocks more than the other?”

“…more that first one.”

“Good, because we all know you like mine best. Obviously.”

Auryn laughed from the study.

“So how will this be any different from living in Lemuria, aside from the long trip?” Akoni inquired. “And the proximity to blueberry pancakes?”

“Oh,” I said with a sigh. “Trust me. It will be different…”

17 - FAMILY

Using my water form to get topside was not as much fun as it had the potential to be. Akoni had to have his assistants put the machine into maintenance mode, then snuck me out the way I’d used before, only this time… in water form. And wearing a harness that water dragons were obliged to wear their first few times swimming in the ocean so they didn’t get lost in the dark and currents.

Akoni promised we’d explore the depths more, later, when Lemuria knew what I was and we didn’t have to risk sneaking around his assistants. The swim was a quick outing straight to the surface. Boring and mostly swimming through green murk.

Breaking the surface of the water into sunlight made me chirp with happiness. I splashed and flailed about, bobbing up and down like a deranged buoy. I might be on a leash, but I could splash.

Akoni blew water bubbles as he swirled his fins nearby.

Keon patted the side of the boat.

Awww. All business. Boo.

Akoni dragged me towards the boat. I flopped over in the water like a cat and made them reel me in.
