“Weweren’t commenting,” Akoni said. “Your family was. And they should perhaps stop commenting before we tell themeverybet you’ve lost.”

Uncle Bill coughed.

“I don’t fold in poker, and I don’t flinch during Truth or Dare,” I told Akoni.

“Oh, we know.” Keon smirked.

Well, situation with my hair and eyes resolved. Dad and Bill wanted no further part ofthatconversation.

“Helena!” I heard Mum-Mum (my maternal grandmother) carol from her conversation with my older sister Becka. “You’re here!”

Mum-Mum and Pop-Pop and Becka swarmed across the bright grass. Mum-Mum grabbed me with a strong hand. “I haven’t seen you in ages! We missed you so much at Christmas!”

“New job on the other side of the world.” I left out the whole part about my entire family putting me on blastandon block.

“Did you bring your boyfriend?” Mum-Mum asked. “We’ve heard rumors you found someone new.”

I looked to Mom for help, and she just shrugged in thewe didn’t think you were seriousway.

“Plural, Mum-Mum.” I waved to my harem.

They slid out of the shade into the sunlight, gleaming gold bronze, striking, perfect examples of human males, except for Akoni, who Auryn couldn’t modify to perfection but soften to a stunning exotic appearance that always drew eyes.

And they fucking knew how to pose. Well, Auryn and Keon did, Akoni just wore his princely distance naturally. Fuck those three. They knew how to pose for maximum effect.

“Mum-Mum, Pop-pop,” I said, “These are my… well. My consorts, for lack of a better term.”

“Yourconsorts?”Mum-Mum intoned.

Keon gave her his most winning smile, “Polyandry is common in our home country. She can’t marry us because she’s a United States citizen, and she’s not willing to choose one of us to suit your government.”

There he was, flexing his First Contact Protocol training, just oozing charm.

“She’s concerned one of us will get the wrong idea about which one she favors.” Akoni raised a brow at Auryn and Keon. “Although we all know the answer to that.”

Auryn’s brows dipped in a mild golden glower. “I assure you, none of these Americans care.”

“They care. I have followed their politics. Theycare. They care a very great deal.”

“And if you were so dutiful about following their politics, you would realize we are precisely in the area of the country where non-traditional relationships are contentious.”

“You say that like I care about catering to their feelings of entitlement to decide what consenting adults should do in private, with their own bodies. But for the sake of clarification, I don’t care.”

My sisters clapped hands over mouths and gave each otherohhhhh shiiiitttttlooks while my grandparents all looked like they’d collectively swallowed the same fish.

Keon gave Akoni a baleful look. “Andthisis why we do not take you off the island.Ever.”

“I embarrass you with my shine?” Akoni brushed his knuckles along his bronze skin.

As one, and in perfect sync, Keon and Auryn rolled their eyes.

“Right. Where’s the beer,” I said. “They’re determined to embarrass me.”

“You said to be ourselves,” Akoni said.

“No, she said forusto be ourselves and foryouto behave,” Keon corrected.

“Ialwaysbehave,” Akoni said.
