She looked starstruck. Because he’d shown her affection?

Maybe he was a little shocked himself.

A smile tugged just slightly at the corner of her pretty pink lips. “Are you sure you want to sit? Because I have something better in mind.”

Were they back to sex again? He felt disappointed, but he played along. “What’s that?”

She grabbed his hand then she started swaying.

“What are you doing?” he said with a chuckle.

“Dancing,” she said. “Listen.”

He did, hearing nothing but the sultry sounds of Sinatra slipping out of the kitchen. “You like Sinatra?”

“Let’s just say I have a thing for Ol’ Blue Eyes. And blue eyes in general.”

A slow smile spread across his face. “Not green?” he teased.

She shook her head. “Green might turn my head for a while, but I always come back to blue.”

They were both swaying now, facing one another, almost as if they really were dancing.

And damn it, he’d been right. It wasfunrelaxing with her.

It struck him then, and he almost didn’t say it, but what the hell? This was all about achieving their goal, right? And while he wasn’t going to profess his undying love to her or lie to her by telling her they were ever going to be more than what they were now, this wasn’t just about sex for him. And maybe her knowing that would work to their advantage.

“You know what this means, don’t you?” he said.

“What?”

“Once the pizza arrives, this will officially be our first date.” Even once it left his mouth, the statement didn’t scare him as much as it should have.

She looked skeptical. “How do you figure?”

“A meal. Wine. Music. Dancing. What more could we ask for?”

Slowly, she smiled, her eyes shining so bright that it was like looking into the sun and not caring that it was about to engulf him.

“What more, indeed,” she said, her eyes heated and sparkling with promise.

They swayed for a bit longer. Then, unable to resist, Julian pulled Skylar into his arms, still swaying. She held herself stiffly for a few seconds before she relaxed and rested her cheek against his shoulder. She wrapped her arms around his neck while he wrapped his around her waist.

Lavender and champagne.

He inhaled her scent like it was his new favorite drug. After a moment, he rested his cheek on the top of her head. She sighed and settled in even deeper while they swayed to Sinatra in his favorite pizza shop. Without thinking about it, he’d shared part of himself that no one could read about on the internet, and look where it led them—dancing with her in his arms and sex the last thing on his mind— as much as that was possible given she was pressed against him and of course, his body was responding quite vigorously.

The longer they danced, the more Julian became aware of the words that hung in the air, calling to him like a siren’s song. They spoke of feeling low in a cold world. Of how someone’s smile and soft cheeks and tenderness were powerful enough to break through fears. Of a foolish heart and breathless charm and, yes, love.

As the song came to an end, Julian straightened back and looked down at Skylar.

The look on her face was soft and dreamy.

It was a look he never wanted to forget.

Fate or free will?

Hope or fear?
