Howam I supposed to focus on anything other than the fact that that guy probably had his hands all overmyCarra?

That there is a child out there who is either his or mine and that child could be that little dark-haired boy?

I can’t keep this in anymore. I’m going to explode!

A lava-flow of pain and anger rises until a thick mass is blocking off my airway. Every beat of my heart intensifies the agony. This has to stop.

One of them has got the answers. Answers I need. Answers I deserve.

And I’m going to get them right the fuck now!

CHAPTERTWENTY-FOUR

Kieran makes a U-turn and rails the car around the corner, flying out into traffic on the main road.

In the back seat, Ariel bounces around, cursing. “Holy shit, gangster.”

He takes another turn. Then another. Clinging to the rail on the door, I yell, “Kieran, for god’s sake. You are driving like an ass. Remember when you almost got us—”

The car screeches to a stop. Behind us, the two gigantic black SUVs tires squeal.

Kieran clenches the steering wheel and stares straight ahead. I've never seen him look so unhinged. “Ariel, get out.”

When she doesn’t move, he barks, “Go!”

Silently, she opens the door and gets out. The door closes, and in the silence in the car, I swear I can hear a bomb’s fuse hissing.

A second later, Max appears at Kieran’s window. He taps on it.

Kieran flips him off.

Max is pissed. “McGregor. Open up.”

Kieran's angrier and he roars back. “Fuck off, Max. This is none of your business.”

Then he throws the car in gear and tears away from the curb.

“Seriously,” I screech. “You’re going to kill someone.”

“I’m ready to kill someone,” he grits out as he takes a turn. It feels like we’re going seventy in a thirty mile per hour zone. It’s a neighborhood street and he’s going far too fast.

“What if there’s children or a dog!” I yell. I don’t need to yell. He’s just a foot from me, but I can’t seem to get my vocal cords in control.

Or my breathing. I’m running without going anywhere. I hang on and yell his name again.

This time, he takes a breath, lets up on the accelerator. He’s still driving fast, but he’s not going to mow anyone down now.

Jesus, this man and I are going to have to have a talk about his rage-driving habit.

"Now. What’s going on?” I demand, my voice a few decibels lower.

He takes another fast corner and I realize this is bad. I know where we are. Panic smacks me. Nikki and Marcus’s house is just ahead. I grab the dash. Desperate, I scream at him. “What are youdoing?”

“Getting to the bottom of this bullshit.”

The tires bark as the Mercedes slams to a stop. He knows. He knows! My heart tries to tear out through my throat. “Kieran—”

But he’s already out of the car, striding up the long sidewalk toward the house. Murder is in his eyes, the tightness of his shoulders, swirling around him like a black vapor.
