I scramble out of the car.“Please!”It’s the only word I can form in my state of terror.

He whirls back to face me, jabs his finger at the house. “Either you or him! One of you better fucking tell me the truth.”

My mouth refuses to work as my brain tries to shut down. All the air squeezes out of me. “Please. Don’t—”

The front door bursts open on the house. Marcus steps onto the porch. He’s got a sawed-off shotgun in his hands. The narrowed focus of his eyes is lethal. He’s big. Angry. Utterly terrifying.

The man might not be in the mob, but the way he’s holding that gun says he’s more than capable of using it to take care of his family. “Calm the fuck down or get off my property,” he says in a feral, dangerous tone.

And of course...Kieran stalks toward him.

I freak. "Kieran, please don’t. Let’s get in the car and talk."

Kieran spits out the words that break me in half, “Did you getmy fiancéepregnant?”

Marcus’s eyes flip to me. He knows I’m hiding Finn. He just doesn’t know who from. No one knows. When your life is like mine, people don’t ask questions because they know the answers might get them killed.

I grab Kieran’s arm, completely out of my mind with fear. “This has nothing to do with Marcus.”

He shrugs me off, rips off his coat and clenches his fists like he’s not the least bit concerned about facing down that shotgun.

“Take a step back, mate,” Marcus says in a deadly quiet voice.

Undeterred, Kieran says, “I’ve seen the video of you two.”

A bolt of lightning striking me wouldn’t have surprised me as much as Kieran’s words. Video?

Marcus’s eyes flip to me.

There could be a video. Of course, there could. I was pregnant. I spent time with Nikki and Marcus during that time. Who knows what Kieran saw.

But I know one thing. Nothing intimate has ever happened with another man. Kieran is my only partner.

I step between Kieran and Marcus, which makes both of them mad. Twin growls vibrate around me.

Trying to sound calm, I ask, “What video are you talking about?”

“You pregnant. This fuckface with you. Remember? Because I sure fucking do.” He glares at Marcus, “When I saw you today, I knew it was you. And now it’s time for everyone to come clean.”

I press my hand to Kieran’s vibrating chest and take a big breath. Itistime. I can’t hide this anymore. People I care about will be hurt.

“It’s your baby.”

Kieran flinches. His eyes burn hot. His throat works.

“Finn is your baby.”

He hasn’t looked at me yet. Behind me, Marcus is silent.

Finally, Kieran breathes.

I drop my forehead to his chest. Behind his sternum, his heart is whaling against the bone, just like mine. “Finn, your son, was born nine months after you left, almost to the day. He was a healthy baby, but I had to hide him away from the world. I couldn’t keep him safe from my father. I had no choice. He was my priority, the result of what to me was an act of love, and I didn’t have anyone else to turn to.”

An unsteady hand cups the back of my head. His other arm wraps around me. His chest shudders. My tears fall. I don’t know what color they are, but they feel like a dark river, pouring out of me. Colored by so much fear. So much loneliness. So many secrets.

“Kieran, there’s only ever been you,” I sob, voice cracking.

Behind me, the door opens and closes quietly. We’re alone until Max and the other SUV roar up.
