I lay a blue Passport on her lap. The light dances on her diamond and emerald ring as she opens it. With a small smile, she says, “Katherine O’Brien.”

I hold mine open for her. “Meet your soon to be husband, “Kenley O’Brien.”

The light inside her shines through her eyes as I slide her new driver's license, and all the accompanying documents onto the small table in front of us. “It’s all here. We’ll need to memorize the details, but it’s a complete identity set-up for both of us.”

Worry creases her brow. “Are we going back to Dreamcatcher Manor? I hope so, I really like it there. And I love the name. We’ll be able to dream now, won’t we?”

“Yes, sweetheart, we will. And we can go wherever you want. We have the whole world to choose from, or we can stay right where we are. There’s also this.” I slide a photo from between the pages. It’s an arial image of turquoise water, green land, and a large home with a blue tile roof.

“Heavens, what is that?”

“A home I bought for us years ago. It’s on a little island in the Bahamas. Totally private. Very remote.”

Her words are breathy, her eyes are dancing. “Sounds so perfect.”

I tap my finger on the image of the house. “It’s big enough for a family.”

She gulps. Settles herself, then asks, “Is that why you bought such a big mansion?”

“I didn’t know what the future would hold for us.”

With a firm nod of her chin, she reaches over and takes my hand. “I love you Kieran—I mean, Kenley O’Brien. I think we should talk about having kids because I’m very much liking that idea.”

“Morekids,” I say as I lean in and press my lips to her, delicate throat. “Finn will always be our child no matter where he wants to live. But nothing would make me happier than to get to watch you carry my child. To share her birth. To be there for every single minute of it.”

CHAPTERFORTY-EIGHT

Even though we land, I’m still floating somewhere up there in the clouds. I might never come down.

I’ve never been to Vegas. It’s a bit riotous, with cars and people and billboards and giant hotels everywhere. There’s a buzzing energy about the place that seems to make the lights glow unnaturally bright.

The ‘strip’ is just like the movies make it out to be, and the little wedding chapels that dot the road are totally charming.

The limo turns sharply into a parking lot. Before us, a giant set of red dice perch on top of a tiny building. Beside me, Kieran chuckles. “Thought the Lucky in Love theme worked for us.”

“You’re so right!” He helps me out of the giant car and we hurry together toward the door. We disappear inside as Carra Coghlan, and Kieran McGregor.

We decide we want this to be our last act as ourselves. I love Kieran and he loves me, so we will bind ourselves to each other, because that’s what we promised to do, regardless of who we have to be when we step out of this place.

This needs to be a true vow. A true binding. The manifestation of true love.

This is us, the true us, giving ourselves to each other. Forever.

As we are asked to kiss for the first time as husband and wife, we share a last kiss as Carra and Kieran, followed by a first kiss as a promise of everlasting love no matter what comes next. Looking into his eyes, I know that I am now free to hope. Free to dream. Free to be me. A different me. The me I should have been all along.

When we emerge, we’re running, laughing like two maniacs, and to the world we are now officially Mr. and Mrs. Kenley O’Brien.

I couldn’t be happier. I swear, I’m up there with the 747s. And that doesn’t end. Kieran sweeps me off my feet, literally, and carries me through the lobby of the biggest, most beautiful hotel I’ve ever seen and doesn’t put me down until he tosses me on the bed and crawls on top of me.

His face turns surprisingly serious. When he buries his face in my neck and shudders, my heart lurches. “What’s wrong, honey?”

“I just can’t believe this moment is finally here. I’ve waited so fucking long.”

When I wrap my arms around his neck, he hugs me fiercely to his body. He only turns loose long enough to wiggle me out of my dress, before he’s clutching me as if he’s never letting go.

He does take a moment to grin down at the gun strapped to my thigh. “Planning on putting a hole in your new husband so soon?”

With a teasing sound, I say, “If you don’t perform...”
