Last night was easily the most amazing night of my life. Her body was so receptive and responsive that it felt like she was designed just for me. None of my cold shower fantasies about her came close to the real thing.

She stretches and moans as she opens her eyes and smiles.

“I almost thought it was a dream. I’m so glad to know that it was real,” she smiles groggily.

“Me too, princess,” I tell her and kiss her on the forehead.

“I know we have to be careful, but is there anything that we can do today?” she asks.

I consider it for a moment. Since nobody knows about the cabin, we could probably drive into town, but I’m not ready to chance it. I’d rather poke around a little bit to see if I can get an ID on the person who broke into my apartment first.

“How about a hike?” I ask her and her face lights up.

“That sounds fun. Maybe we can pack lunch and have a picnic in the woods.”

There’s no way I can say no to this girl, so I slap her on the behind and say, “I’ll make us some breakfast and we can head out on an adventure.”

She gets up and runs to the bathroom as I head down the stairs to start cooking.

My cell phone is on the kitchen counter, and I pick it up to find that I’ve missed a call from the Chief. “He can wait,” I mumble and set the phone back down.

The coffee is brewed and I’m finishing up the eggs and bacon when Carrie comes downstairs. She has her hair pulled back in a ponytail and tucked through the back of an old ball cap she found in my closet upstairs. She’s wearing a pair of my sister's jean shorts and a halter top.

“There are jackets in the hall closet. You might want to grab one. It’s cooler under the trees than it is in the sun,” I explain.

“What should we pack for lunch?” she asks, still beaming like a kid on her way to the county fair.

“Breakfast first, then we’ll take care of that.” I set a plate of food down beside her cup of coffee.

We takethe path behind the cabin into the woods. It’s an uphill, rocky hike, but there’s a wide stream and lots of flowers and wildlife to look at. Carrie brambles up the path ahead of me, stopping every so often to snap a photo with her phone.

“Take a picture with me,” she says and hands me her phone to take a selfie.

I snap a photo of us with the brook in the background and hand the phone back to her. She looks at it and smiles saying, “It’s perfect. We look good together.”

“You look good,” I reply.

“Ha, look at you! You’re like a male model.” She grins and starts back up the hill. I catch her around the waist and pull her back to me.

“Kiss me,” I growl and she leaps into my arms to press her lips against mine.

This day should be perfect, but when we lie on the blanket in the clearing and sit down for lunch, I look at her and remember that she’s still very much in danger. I have to solve this case and remove the threat that’s looming over her, and the only way to do that is to get back to work.

“Hey, where did you go?” she asks me.

“I’m still here, baby. Eat your sandwich so we can hike to the top of the hill. The view up there is amazing.”

She doesn’t need to know that I’m worried. She’s having too much fun. She lays her head on my lap while she eats, and I steal the corner off of her sandwich and pop it in my mouth. She slaps my hand and giggles.

“You know, I’ve never met a cop before. I always thought that you guys were stiff and humorless.”

“We are, baby girl. I’m just pretending to have fun,” I reply.

She scans my face and I do my best to remain expressionless, but I can’t help but smile. She laughs. “I’m glad you’re not. This is fun.”

We pack up and head back up the mountain. I can see the clearing ahead so I stop her and cover her eyes.
