Our son, Connor, is asleep in his swing.

“I guess the excitement was too much for him,” I tell Carrie as I take the knife from her hand and begin slicing the cake.

“Thank you, Daddy,” Carrie says and kisses my cheek before collecting Connor and whisking him off to bed.

I drop a scoop of ice cream on top of Carmen’s cake and place it in front of her. “Did you have a good birthday, baby?” I ask her.

“Yes, Daddy,” she answers, dipping her spoon into the ice cream.

Carrie returns and I look up at her and smile. “You know why you had such a good birthday, baby?”

“Why?” Carmen asks through a mouth full of cake.

“Because you’re a very special girl and because you have the best mommy in the world,” I reply.

“And the best daddy, too,” she adds.

“Yes, and the best daddy, too,” Carrie says as she sits down on my lap.

I squeeze her and say, “Damn, two kids and still light as a feather.”

She struggles to put her hand around my bicep and says, “Two kids and still buff like a bodybuilder.”

Carmen finishes her cake and I carry her upstairs to the bath that Carrie has waiting for her. I sit on the floor and squeak her rubber ducky to make her laugh while Carrie washes her hair. She has wavy blonde locks like her mother, but she hates having them washed. She’s afraid shampoo will get in her eyes.

When bath time is finished, we put Carmen to bed and head downstairs to clean up the kitchen and have some alone time.

“Should we have some wine before bed?” I ask Carrie.

“Not tonight, Daddy. Maybe some tea,” she replies.

“Ugh, tea it is then,” I grunt and fill the kettle.

When the dishes are done and the tea is ready, we sit together on the sofa. Carries nestles into her usual place under my arm, and I stroke her silky hair.

“Did you mean it when you said that I was still light as a feather?” she asks me.

“Of course I did, princess. You haven’t changed at all since the day that I met you. Still as sexy as ever,” I reply.

“Good. That means that hopefully, it won’t be too hard to bounce back again.”

“Bounce back again? What does that mean?”

“Remember how you said that waiting three years between kids was too long? You thought they’d have more fun if they were closer together.”

“I remember,” I urge her to continue.

“Well, we can’t do anything to change the gap between Carmen and Connor, but I think Carmen will have a lot of fun being an older sister to Connor and his little sibling,” she looks up at me and bats her crystal blue eyes.

“And when is Connor going to get this little brother or sister?” I ask.

“I’d guess in about seven months or so,” she grins. “Still happy, Daddy?”

“You know I’ve always wanted to have a big family. How could I not be happy, princess?”

“I love you, Daddy.”

“I love you more than anything, baby girl.”
