When I got home, I treated the rest of the night like how I usually do. The next day, I went to the office, and when I got there, I already saw McKenzie working.

“Did you go home last night?” I muttered.

“Maybe I did. Not like you’d give a shit, though, Aaron,” she retorted.

I swear, she was still the same little shit I remembered back then. I wanted to hate her. I really did.

I didn’t say another word, closing my door and focusing on the company’s efforts. However, an annoyance washed through my body just thinking about McKenzie.

Why did I want to be around her? She was still a brat and someone who didn’t know her place. But still, the way she looked under me, moaning my name as I slammed my cock into her, it looked so damn hot.

And there was also a cuteness that came with it too. She acted coy, and I could see even through the antagonism, she still had that energy that made me want more of her.

I didn’t know what else to do or what else to say. But, in a way, I couldn’t let go of McKenzie. She was the first woman in a long time to make me feel this way.

I shook my head.

I shouldn’t be having these thoughts about a woman that much younger than me, let alone my daughter’s best friend. But things changed, and somehow, despite how she acted, she pushed through those barriers and exposed me for what I was.

I didn’t get it myself. I honestly hated it, and yet, there was a part of me that craved more, even if I knew deep down it was a foolish action to undertake.

Over the next couple of days, McKenzie hung out more. It first started because we still had some coding to do. But, as we spent more time together, things changed.

I noticed Emily looked adorable when she bit her lip, focusing on the coding at hand. It was like she was so focused, and she wanted to get the job done.

There was something almost adorable about all of that. It made me happy to see her happy. Maybe it was because, in a sense, I took care of her whenever she was at our place.

As we sat down, I looked at McKenzie.

She looked up at me, furrowing her brows. “What do you want?”

“Nothing, it’s just…you seem happier? Was that night that much fun for you?” I spoke.

“No, I’m just…I’m glad I’m not in the spotlight, that’s all,” she muttered.

“I get that. I’m glad you’re not either,” I said.

We went back to work, and then McKenzie spoke again.

“No, you don’t understand Aaron. You taking me off reception was the best thing. I don’t have to worry about asshole customers telling me I did everything wrong,” she mentioned.

I laughed. “I get that. I’m glad that I could help, though. It seems like I’ve been helpful in that regard.”

She nodded. “I suppose so. So, thanks.”

“No problem,” I replied.

Over the next few days, McKenzie hung around me much more. I wasn’t sure if this was on purpose or unintentional. But she came over whenever I worked at my desk, working next to me.

“I gave you your own desk, McKenzie,” I chided.

“I know, but I want to work here, okay? Besides, it’s easier to work next to you in case I’ve got a question.”

I raised my hands and nodded. “Okay, fair enough.”

We went back to working on our projects. I stepped forward, telling McKenzie I was going to do my rounds. Why the hell did I think she cared was beyond me. She waved her hand.

“Go ahead. I’ll be here,” she said.
