I walked around. The hospital was better than before. Since I had McKenzie doing all of the coding, the receptionists could handle everything else, and I managed to find a replacement receptionist for her.

It was a girl named Ivy, who looked about forty years old. She had a picture of two kids next to her. I figured she would be older which would be better as a receptionist for this neck of the hospital.

McKenzie was smart, but she didn’t need to be in such a high-pressure environment as the reception area. The girl excelled in coding, which was why I planned to keep her in this area until I had no use for her anymore.

When I returned, McKenzie signed off on another piece of paper, sitting there with her hands in her lap.

“Something the matter?” I inquired.

She shook her head.

“Nah, I just finished everything,” she said.

I looked, and sure enough, everything for today was done.

“Wow, so we’re ahead,” I said, the surprise evident on my face.

I didn’t think she would do that. But then, she nodded.

“It’s easier said than done, Aaron. I worked hard, and I was able to make it work. It’s no biggie,” she said.

“Well, thank you. You’ve stepped up quite a bit,” I told her.

An awkward silence followed. I struggled to figure out what to say next. But then, she spoke.

“If you don’t mind, could we talk? Whenever you’re free,” she said.

I turned to her, wondering just what she wanted, but then I nodded. “I’m free now.”

She moved toward me, her eyes looking at the clock. “I meant after work if that makes sense.”

The light bulb clicked on. Oh, so that’s what she wanted.

“Very well,” I replied.

Time passed, and McKenzie continued to work, not saying another word to me. Finally, when the clock struck seven, and everyone left, she looked up and put everything aside.

“What’s the matter, McKenzie—”

She pointed to the sofa—the place where it all began. I sat next to her, adjusting my glasses. For the first time, McKenzie looked…nervous? She pushed her hands through her short, brown hair, her eyes darting around at everything but me.

“Say, what was it that you wanted to talk about? I wanted to discuss that with you quickly so that—”

“I’m getting to that,” she replied.

I sat there, watching her turn slightly red.

“I’m trying to figure out how to put this, but…it’s about what happened the other night. You know, when I said those things and….”

“And we had sex,” I told her.

“Yeah, we had…we had sex,” she said.

I looked at her, confusion obvious on my face. “Did something happen?”

“Well, no, it’s just…this is embarrassing,” she cried out.

I took her hand and held it. “You don’t have to feel embarrassed; you know.”
