“I need you to find her! I’m not going to wait around,” I said.

They finally did so, checking around and asking people in the area. She didn’t take her car, so I imagined she didn’t go too far.

The entire time, I tapped my fingers on the desk. The anxiety that flooded through me drove me absolutely batty. I could barely take it.

I needed McKenzie back. I needed to protect her and save her from the horrors that were out there.

The next day, I still didn’t have a response. I tried everything, from contacting the police to even asking a couple of people around the hospital. Nobody saw her.

That could only mean one thing.

The people who took her knew what they were doing. But unfortunately, that left it to two types of people: terrorists and rival gangs.

I didn’t think anyone wanted to kidnap McKenzie because she was my girlfriend to get to me. That would be stupid. But also, stranger things happened.

With a sigh, I grabbed the little phonebook that sat in the bowels of my desk. I never touched this thing. When I pulled it out, a layer of dirt appeared along the edges and top. It’s been that long since I pulled it out.

I blew on the cover, and a trail of dust flew into the air. I opened it, heading for the dog-eared pages that were there.

They were the numbers of two people I thought I would never need to use again.

A private investigator and the only person I had contact with when I was a part of the Snakes.

That time in the Snakes was a different world. I hadn’t thought of it for a long time, but when I scoured over Rollin’s name, I knew I had to say something.

Then there was the private investigator, Glenn Parker. He was the guy who helped me with protecting my family. The guy was a retired PI, but he said if I ever needed anything, to call him.

I knew that both of these numbers were the keys to saving McKenzie. Nobody heard a peep from her. None of the police officers in the area even saw her. There was no way that the guys in blue could save a gal like her.

The people that took her were hardened criminals, and they were people that used to be a part of my life long, long ago.

I dialed Rollin first. He was the easier of the two to work with. I held my phone to my ear and prayed he would pick it up. The last thing I wanted was to find out the number wasn’t usable. If it wasn’t, I’d be back at square one and would need a PI for herandto find Rollin.

After three rings, I heard the phone pick up.

“Yes,” Rollin said.

I smiled, realizing that his voice hadn’t changed in a long time. “Rollin…it’s Fox.”

There was a pause on the other end. Then, I heard Rollin say a few words to the people he worked with. He then walked over and spoke.

“What the hell are you doing, Aaron? You’re contacting me? I thought you had given up on this life. You were the one who left,” he said.

I listened to the hiss in his words. He still sounded as secretive as he used to. Rollin was the only one who actually understood and humored me when I told him about my qualms.

“I know, Rollin, but…I need your help. I need some information,” I said.

The sound of shuffling echoed through my ear. I presumed that Rollin was sitting down.

“What kind of info do you need, Aaron?” he asked. His voice softened at the words.

I pursed my lips. How did I begin with this? I mean, I was calling in a request to save a girl. That was simple enough, right?

But it wasn’t just any girl. It was McKenzie, a woman who was after my own heart. I sat against the back of the chair.

“It’s…it’s my girlfriend. McKenzie,” I told him.

There was a long pause, and then, I heard him speak.
