“You have a girlfriend?” he asked.

I sighed. “Yes, I do. And I’m pretty sure I know who took her. Someone I didn’t want to ever think about again.”

“Who?”

My lips pursed as I looked forward.

“Remember the Rangers?”

There was another stunned silence.

“Oh,them. I thought we were out of the business?” he said.

I knew this. I put that part of myself aside. I didn’t want to think about that, but there was nothing more that I could do.

I looked at the doorway. If I could go for her right now, I could save her. That’s what I wanted to do, to save this woman, and to bring her back into my life.

“Are you sure about this?”

I listened to the words that were said. I wasn’t sure about anything else right now in my life. The fate that McKenzie and I had, our qualms. I didn’t even know what was going on with her. But also, I couldn’t be upset. I wanted to protect her.

When she was ready, she would tell me the truth.

“I’m damn sure about this, Rollin. We’ve got to get out there and save…save her,” I said.

My voice cracked on the final syllable.

I sat there, realizing what had come out of my mouth. I wanted to protect McKenzie from everything and be the best person I could be for her. I wanted nothing more than to keep her in my life and protect her from these faults. I didn’t know what to do other than this.

The protection I wanted for McKenzie was on a level higher than I’ve ever felt for others.

“All right. Meet me in the alleyway in twenty minutes. I’ve got the goods for you.”

“Got it.”

I hung up, and I sighed. I knew immediately what would be done.

I’d have to protect McKenzie and take care of her, no matter what. I needed McKenzie to be all right, to be safe and sound.

I just wanted her back in my arms.

I walked out of the back of the office, slithering over towards the back doorway that took me to the alleyway. It was a place I only had the key to because a bike sat in the mini carport nearby. It was my old bike.

I vowed never to get back on it again for as long as I lived. But sometimes, rules were meant to be broken. So, I got on it, heading out of the back alleyway to the one I often flocked to when my daughter was young. And when Natalie was a part of my life.

The alleyway behind Bernard’s tattoo shop.

When I got to the side, I saw a familiar red motorcycle that sat there. It had to be Rollin. When I got there, though, it wasn’t just him.

It was Spike and Flounder. They were two of the other guys in the motorcycle gang. Of course, we were all older, but obviously, that didn’t mean shit to them at all.

“You guys,” I said as I stepped in.

“We weren’t going to let you go in alone,” Flounder said.

“When I heard that the Rangers were still in business, I knew we needed to do something. Are you ready to fight?” Spike asked.

He handed me a gun. It was a small handgun, but it would be enough to do the job. As I touched it, I remembered everything I had done back then—that old life of mine.
