I walked inside, shooting a couple of the initial guards in the leg, making a full charge. If I remembered Goran like how he was early on, he was the type of man that refused to back down without a fight. He wouldn’t stop until everyone was dead.

The fact that he waited this long to resurface pissed me the hell off, though. It was like a cruel reminder that I could never escape this past. Well, not tonight.

Tonight, I would finally escape. I refused to let my past hold me back like this. I would move on, and I didn’t care what would happen.

I walked through, reloading my gun. I had twenty bullets, and I also had my knife on me. It was a knife I promised myself never to use until it was time for me to save someone.

There was a time for this.

I walked through the first room, shooting the guy in the leg. Then, I roundhouse kicked him in the chest, sending him flying. When he landed with a thud, I nodded to myself.

“I’ve still got it.”

Rollin and the other guys took out the rest of them, and we all congregated in the center. I walked forward, grabbing the doorway and pulling.

“Shit, it’s locked. There’s no way I can bust it open either,” I said.

“I’ve got this,” I heard Flounder say.

I watched as he put the bomb in front of the doorway. Then, after about ten seconds, a large explosion filled the room.

The door blew clean off, and then we marched inside. Their hideout was small. I knew that just beyond here, he had to be here. Goran would never leave a challenge like this.

I walked toward the center, and that’s when I heard it—the sound of rushing water and small pleas and cries.

“McKenzie!” I screamed out.

I followed the sound of the grunts and gasps of pain. I didn’t care about anything else. The other guys could take care of the rest of it. But, right now, there was but one person I cared about more than anyone else.

It was her. The woman that saved me, that helped me realize my past was my past, and that was it.

I went to the other doorway. I kicked it open, heading on inside. The other guys followed after clearing, and we got to the center.

There he was. Goran. And behind him was McKenzie, who had water already up to her chest. She looked at me with both panic and relief at the same time. I didn’t blame her, that’s for sure.

“You’re here!” I rushed on over, but I was blocked as soon as I got there. “You…”

Goran laughed at the sight. “Well, it’s nice to see you again, Aaron. I take it that you got my message.”

“Let her go!” I roared.

He sat back and held the key in his hands. The one that could save McKenzie.

“Ah-ah, you need to beat me first. I want to make sure that you and I have a little bit of fun together,” he said.

That sly bastard! I looked at him with fiery anger that I couldn’t quench anymore.

“I’m going to kill you right here, right now.”

I reached for my gun, but then Goran spoke.

“No. We don’t do that cheap shit here. Get your knife out. Fight me. Like old times,” he said.

I stiffened at those words. How many times has it been since we fought like this? Why was…he doing this? I was so angry and frustrated that I didn’t know what else to do or what to say.

“I’m going to kill you, and I don’t care what else,” I said.

I tossed the gun over to Rollin, who fumbled but caught it. It was loaded, of course, but I kept the safety off. That was for a reason.
