“It’ll be okay.” I held her there, and for a long time, neither of us said a word. When she finally was able to form words, she turned to me.

“You…you came back,” she started.

I stroked her hair. I nodded at her words.

“Yes, McKenzie. I came back. I knew you needed me, so I came back to save you. The last thing I ever wanted was for you...to get hurt like this,” I said, my voice cracking as I uttered those words.

She closed her eyes, a pleasant smile crossing her face. “Thank you… Aaron.”

She lay there in my arms, snuggling tightly. I motioned to the other guys, and we walked on out. I brought her to my motorcycle.

“Are you going back?” Rollin said.

I looked at all of them and nodded. “Yeah. This was only supposed to be temporary. I’ve got to take her back, and I’ve got to protect her.”

Rollin nodded, extending his hand. “You’re good, boss. It was a pleasure working together again.”

I took the hand and held it tightly. I looked at Rollin. Despite our age and the trauma, we went through, we were all still a team in our own way.

“It’s good to work together again. I hope we don’t have a situation like this down the line though,” I said.

The other guys agreed. After that, we both parted ways, and I helped McKenzie onto my bike. As we drove on back, she held me there, and I stayed close. But then, I stopped.

I needed to end this.

I went back to the hideout, grabbing a match from my pocket. I kept them there for a reason. I lit it up, placing it on the edge of the building. As it was engulfed in flames, I looked at it.

The feeling of a presence nearby pulled me out of there. It was McKenzie. She walked towards me and held me. We watched the embers pick up, turning the place into ashes.

“I’m sorry for…ever getting you involved. It’s over though,” I said.

She turned to me and touched my face. The smile on her face was infectious.

“I’m glad that I got involved. This was the end of your past. And it’s the beginning of our future.”

Chapter 19: McKenzie

Afterweweredone,we went back. First, however, I needed to handle one last thing.

Emily.

There was still that problem. I didn’t know what to do about it. I reached out to her, asking if she could talk to me. I didn’t expect a response, but she said that she was free if they wanted to talk tomorrow afternoon. We agreed to meet up at the park together.

I sat on the bench and checked my watch. It was getting late. She might’ve already left the place. But, on the other hand, she might’ve already moved on. A few minutes later, the sound of footsteps filled the area. I looked up, and there was Emily: the same dark eyes and brownish-black hair.

“McKenzie.”

I motioned for her to sit down.

She glared at me, and I could see that she wasn’t ready to accept any of this.

Well, I wasn’t ready to continue to hide things any longer.

For a moment, a silence filled the area between us.

But then, I took a deep breath. “Aaron and I aren’t breaking up,”

She looked at me with shock in her eyes. “So, wait, you called me here just to tell me you want to continue to sleep with my father? I thought that we were best friends, McKenzie! What the hell.”
