“I know. So, got any other juicy secrets you want to tell me and throw me for a loop,” she teased.

I tensed up.

Emily’s eyes widened as she looked at me. “Oh my gosh, do not tell me that you’re cheating on my dad.”

“Wait, what? Why the hell would I do that?” I cried out.

Emily laughed. “It was just a joke. I wanted to make sure you weren’t that heinous.”

I sighed. “No, it’s not that, though. It’s something else.”

She looked at me with confusion. I guess I had to tell her whether she liked it or not.

“I’m…I’m pregnant,” I finally said.

Emily’s eyes widened, her jaw dropping. “Wait, you mean with….”

“Yeah. Aaron. We…we’re going to be parents. I haven’t told him yet, though. I’m not sure if I should even tell you this sort of thing and—”

“I’m glad you did,” Emily said.

I looked at her, surprised at the words she said.

She touched my hand and held it. “You know, Dad always said he wanted me to have a little brother or sister. After I was born, I knew he and my mom tried, but it was impossible. I was a miracle baby. She was infertile, so it wasn’t like she could just have another. That was…a big part of my dad’s relationship troubles.”

I listened, shocked by this. I didn’t know that Aaron felt that way.

“He didn’t even tell me this,” I said.

“Yeah, because he didn’t want to, McKenzie. My dad’s like that. He doesn’t like getting personal. I guess, except with you. But my mom told me about it. The fact that she couldn’t conceive after me was a big problem. In a way, you carrying my little sibling is…the gift that he wanted. Still fucking weird, but I accept it,” she said.

I bit my lip as I listened to her say these words.

“I see.”

“Yeah. I don’t hate you for doing this, McKenzie. It’s just strange. That’s all.”

“I know that it is. And I’m glad that, despite everything, you get it,” I said.

She squeezed my hand.

“I do. But you have to tell him. Not just because of what I said earlier. But because…this is what he would want. He doesn’t hate the idea of being a parent, necessarily. He wasn’t the best dad to me for some reason. I never found out the reason. But he’s mellowed out,” she said.

I thought about what to say. I didn’t know whether I should tell her the truth or not.

“You can tell me, McKenzie. I’m not scared,” she insisted.

I knew this, but would it change their relationship?

I sighed. “Your dad wasn’t there for you because he made a lot of bad decisions. He was…part of a motorcycle gang. And well, he just wanted you to be happy. He’s felt bad about that, but he does love you.”

McKenzie sat back and stretched her arms, chuckling at my words. “Oh my gosh, so I was right.”

I cocked my head with confusion. “Right?”

“I knew my dad was up to something. He’s always like that. He’s always keeping shit secret from me, and I hate it. I’ve tried to ask him about it before, but he never said what was going on. I found some old motorcycle memorabilia when I was clearing out one of the guest rooms. I just never thought I’d get confirmation,” she cried out.

I shrugged.
