“So, you’re not surprised.

“Not in the least. My dad’s like that. He’s always so secretive, that when you get the truth, it’s like it looks you in the eyes. But hey, that’s what makes me happy to hear from you. Maybe he won’t tell me, but he’ll at least tell you,” she said.

I smiled.

“Thanks, McKenzie.”

We got up, embracing one another. Emily seemed happy about this. She didn’t hate me, and I was thankful for that. Before we parted ways though, she spoke once more.

“By the way.”

I turned around and looked at her.

“What’s up?”

“If you want, I can try to tell my dad about you carrying the kid.”

I shook my head.

“That won’t be necessary. I’m going to tell him. Right now, since we’re done.”

She high fived me.

“Atta girl!”

We parted ways, and for the first time in a long time, I felt better. I texted Aaron and asked him if he was free. I didn’t want to keep up this charade for much longer. Aaron told me that he would be after five. I said if we could, I’d like to meet somewhere nearby. He said the office but then changed it to his penthouse suite.

I jotted down the address and smiled to myself. Of course, this wasn’t ideal, nor did I expect this to go straightforward, but I was being honest, and for me, that’s what ultimately mattered.

I needed to tell Aaron everything. If I didn’t, it would only bite me in the ass further.

After I finished up here, I drove to the address and walked in. When I got inside, I marveled at the splendor. It was a good distraction from the sudden realization that I was going to tell him everything.

About the baby, about our love, and about…the future that we both would have together.

Chapter 20: Aaron

AfterIgotthetext, my mind raced. What could McKenzie want from me? Typically, she was pretty straightforward with desires, but she seemed almost worried about something. It was a bit curious.

I finished at the office and then drove to the penthouse suite I had. I noticed her car in the guest parking area. When I got up there, I saw McKenzie on the couch, asleep. She looked super cute, but it surprised me she was that tired. Her eyes fluttered open as she looked at me.

“Sorry. I didn’t know what came over me,” she admitted.

I shook my head.

“Not a problem. When I heard you wanted to talk, I tried to come home as early as I could. Is something the matter?” I asked.

Her expression changed. A look of worry ghosted her face.

“Why don’t you have a seat? We can talk there,” she said.

I looked at her with confusion. McKenzie shuffled to the side, curling herself up together in a slight ball. Did I do something wrong? I sat down next to her, and then I turned.

“McKenzie, I thought by this point we both agreed that if something was wrong, we told one another.”

She nodded. “Yeah, that’s why I called you here. There is something wrong. It’s been a week since the incident. Since I…I got abducted.”

I touched her shoulder. “Well, yeah. I told you that if you needed further time off, you’re welcome to take it.”
