I followed him to the boats, which took us to the different canals. The guy who directed the gondola played music as we went down them. I looked around in surprise.

We were soon in the middle of a large waterway.

“There you go, right here. Just like you asked,” he started.

Wait, what?

Aaron grinned. “Thank you. You can keep playing.”

What the hell was Aaron doing? I looked around with abject confusion, and then, he laughed.

“No need to be tense. I asked him to come out here,” he explained.

“But why? We’re in the middle of a waterway. Isn’t this like bad?” I’d never been out in a body of water like this before.

“Not at all. It’s the perfect place for me to ask this, and it’s where I decided,” he said.

Where has he decided to ask something? What the hell was he talking about?

Aaron got up, the boat rocking slightly.

I gripped the sides, but then, it settled.

“Sorry about that. Just wanted to come a bit closer,” he said.

I rolled my eyes. He could do so without us possibly dying or some shit. He then moved toward the edge of the boat and then got down. That’s when I realized what he was doing.

He was on one knee. He grabbed something from his pocket and pulled it out.

“McKenzie…you’re the love of my life, the light of my life, and you’re also the mother of our child. I love you so, so much. You’ve shown me it’s possible for my grumpy ass to fall in love again. I love you, and I want…the future with you.”

I couldn’t figure out what to say. I was speechless. Finally, he grabbed the ring and brought it out.

“You’re…you’re sure about this, right?”

He nodded. “Damn sure.”

I stared at the ring, tears in my eyes.

I nodded. “I love you, Aaron. I want…a future with you too. I want to be your wife.”

He walked forward, nearly knocking the boat over, and embraced me. I started to cry, but he placed the ring on my finger. It was the most beautiful thing.

I turned to him, seeing those eyes, which were once cold, filled with happiness.

“To forever, McKenzie. Forever and always.”

I pulled him near me and pressed my lips to his. The musician continued as I pulled away.

“Forever and always. The two of us together.”
