They’vekilledpeople. Innocent people—and for what? To satisfy some depraved obsession?

When we’re all done eating, I place my silverware down and look at each of them. “How do you do it?”

Once again, they exchange looks.

“Whydo you do it? Do you plan on killing me the same way?”

“We’ve already told you we don’t want to hurt you,” Michael grits, albeit a bit impatiently. “Isn’t our word good enough for you? If we wanted to hurt you, don’t you think we would have done so already?”

I nod. No matter how dark my thoughts turn, I know they mean it when they say they don’t want to kill me.

But I still need to know.

“Can you just answer my questions, please?”

Christian sets his silverware down on his plate with so much force, I think it’s going to shatter. “Fine. You want to talk? Let’s talk. You asked how we do it—it’s not always the same way each time. Sometimes we strangle them, sometimes we bludgeon them. It just depends on our mood.”

My skin crawls at his admission. “Your mood determines how you kill someone?”

When he nods, I ask them again why they do what they do.

“We’re just sick, I guess,” Michael says. “We told you a little about our childhoods, but we didn’t go into all the little details that made us this way. And we won’t because that’s a part of our lives we want to leave in the past. Basically, we’re just products of our upbringing.”

“I’m sorry,” I whisper.

Josh takes my hand and holds it delicately.

“We didn’t mean for it to go on as long as it has,” he says quietly, as if he’s trying to convince himself as much as he is me. “We really did try to stop, but we’ve been riding the adrenaline of doing something sinister and getting away with it. It’s become an addiction.”

“How did it start?”

They’re all silent for a moment.

“It was a mistake,” Josh starts. “We had a girl over. Things were getting hot pretty quickly and then she said something that triggered us. Christian snapped.”

I look at him questioningly, and he nods.

“He grabbed a bronze statuette and slammed it into her skull so fast, she didn’t even see it coming.”

I shudder at the thought of being in such a vulnerable position with someone and, in the blink of an eye, being murdered.

“We’ve been careful to ensure that we’re covering our tracks, making sure no one can trace anything back to us. But that’s the beauty of having money. When the cops start poking around, we can just pay off whoever’s in charge to destroy any security footage and send them away.”

“There are other people who know what you’ve done?”

The idea that my past managers know of a crime and took money instead of going to the police doesn’t sit right with me.

“There are people whosuspectwhat we’ve done and chose to keep quiet in favor of never having to struggle again,” Christian explains.

I shake my head in disbelief. Michael runs a hand down my back soothingly.

“I know this is a lot for you to take in,” he says as he draws circles on my lower back.

“Yeah, no kidding,” I say with a shaky breath. “I have one more question.”

“What is it?”

“What made you pick me?” I ask cautiously, not wanting to anger them, but I have to know.
