I’ll talk to the doctor about a stronger suppressant.

Promises, promises, promises.

She makes them to herself throughout the drive and, by the time she parks, she almost believes them until the familiar scent invades her senses.

She thought she remembered what it was like.

But it’s so muchbetterthan before.

Her hands shake as the car window rolls down. She’s utterly hypnotized, the scent so heady and delicious that she could cry.

For one ridiculous moment, she thinks about hopping the fence herself and risking the icy cold waters.

And stupid, stubborn her, she’s willing to die trying, if only to get closer to the Alpha that drives her insane.

“Fuck,” she whispers as she stares at the obnoxiously tall fence.

This was a mistake. She promised herself this would be the last time she would ever come here, and it’s a travesty.

She needs to make the most of it and commit his scent to memory so she can use it in the future with all her other lovers.

Store it somewhere in her soul and bring it to the forefront of her mind whenever she feels lonely.

Because this…this is belonging.

This is the scent of hermate.

This is the scent of what could have been.

She can hear Ava’s voice in her mind screaming at her to stop being reckless, but it’s not enough to deter her.

Her hand pulls on the door handle before she can stop herself.

Just once. Just for a minute.

Even the wind tries to stop her. She fights against it to open the door as the aroma crashes down on her. When she stumbles outside, she realizes the mistake she’s made.

She’s frozen in place and paralyzed with longing.

The suppressants haven’t had enough time to regulate into her system.

“Oh, God,” she chokes out, the wind howling in her ears. She stares longingly past the fence, watching as the water churns violently.

No. She could never survive that swim.

How can life be so unfair? How can her bodydemandthis even though she knows it’s wrong?

It’s been more than a minute by now, and the violent air makes it hurt to keep her eyes open.

It’s time to leave.

Let’s just stay another minute. Just one more…

She steps away from her car, ignores the protesting wind, and walks closer to the fence.

It’s time to leave.

But the scent keeps her walking in a trance until her face is pressed almost directly against the chain links.
