He hasn’t been around an Omega since he presented, and the urges and instincts that revolve around her are almost painful.

But Lincoln City has done much worse to him in the past ten years, including forcing his mind to bend and adapt.

And as she runs toward her car, he realizes how lucky he is that he doesn’t have to look for a vehicle.

Unfortunately, that makes her the unlucky one as he slams into her and presses her frame against the car door. He absorbs most of the impact, but he can still hear the air leave her lungs in a startledwhoosh.

It’s not the best introduction, he’ll admit.

But if she happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, that’s her fault, not his.

CHAPTER 9

HAZEL

She was so stupid.

So, so incredibly stupid, and this is how she dies.

She wishes she could go back in time and tell Ava she needed help.

Ava would have talked her out of going back here. Hazel justknowsit.

Because now she’s going to suffocate under the weight of the fuckingboulderthat’s pressed against her.

She knows Alphas are huge, but nothing could have prepared her for the behemoth of a man made of hard muscle that’s crowding her against her car door.

Her face is pressed against the window, her back flush against him as she struggles.

He’s going to kill me, or worse he’s going to—

She fights with everything she has. She thrusts back wildly, attempting to throw an elbow as he halts her movements easily.

“Stop,” he hisses, and it only makes her try harder. Her throat is ragged as she screams against his gloved hand, tears springing to her eyes at the thought of her imminent death.

She doesn’t want to die. She wants tolive. She was just being stupid and impulsive, and she should have—

“I’m not going to hurt you.”

He has an appealing voice, she thinks to herself. Low, with a deep baritone that could send chills up her spine in any other scenario where her world wasn’t turning to shit.

That lovely scent envelops her now, and she could cry at the unfairness of it.

So, she fights harder in vain, knowing at least she will have gone down with a fight.

“Holyshit, I’m not going tohurtyou—” Quick as a flash, he spins her around so she’s eye level with his chest, his weight still pushing up against her.

She was right. He’s nothing but a wall of muscle. She cranes her neck to look up at him, shaking in his hold, and her heart stops.

He’s…handsome. At least what she can see of him.

He’s wearing a black mask that starts just above his nose and obscures his sharp jaw and mouth. But his eyes, even in the dark night and faint lights, are a piercing blue.

She recalls what they showed her in school. Usually, the illustrations were of monstrous faces with bulbous growths obscuring their facial features.

After presenting, the physical appearance changes grotesquely—

Meant only for the military, so much power and brute strength—
