Reckless, monstrous—

He’s wearing a black sweatshirt with the hood pulled up, but a few rogue dark tufts of hair poke out and fall just above his eyes.

It’s all too much to process. The sirens still blare, obnoxious and loud as she continues her struggles in his hold, her energy slowly draining.

“Look at me,” he commands, his hand gripping her shoulder and shaking. “Stop. You’re only going to tire yourself out.”

He’s right, but that doesn’t stop her from attempting to stomp on his boots.

He rolls his eyes—the Alpha actuallyrolls his eyes at her—as she grimaces and balances on her other leg, slightly collapsing against his warm frame.

“Are you done?” he asks.

She yells an angry “mrmph” against his gloved hand, and he sighs. “I need your car keys.”

Her eyes widen as she stares up at him with a disbelieving look.

Likehellthis psycho is taking her car. She needs to get out of here before all hell breaks loose. She needs to evacuate Lincoln City with Ava, and she has to gonow—

But the hand not clamped over her mouth reaches into the pocket of her jeans and takes his time fishing her keys out. His eyes don’t leave hers as he retrieves them from her pants, unaffected by the touch. He dangles the keys in front of her, cocking an eyebrow.

She narrows her eyes in confusion and huffs out a breath against his hand. Why isn’t he attacking her? Doesn’t she smell as good to him as he does to her?

It doesn’t make sense, and the sirens don’t let up, which makes everything worse.

“I’m going to remove my hand,” he says through the mask. “And you’re going to stay quiet.”

She growls, and he chuckles.

“It’s your choice. Either you stay here and wait for theothersto find you, or you come with me.”

The implication is clear in his eyes.

“You think I’m the only one that got out?” he asks, cocking his head. Those beautiful eyes pierce through her, and she wants to punch him. “Do you think those sirens are only forme?”

He’s right, and she hates him for it.

She hates herself even more for being so reckless and ending up in this position.

“Stay quiet. Nod if you understand me.”

He holds her gaze for far too long, his eyes patient, as if he’s used to her antics already.

Reluctantly, she nods, and he removes his hand and steps back.

Fight or flight kicks in again, and she attempts to run.

He must have been expecting it because he spins her around once again, and yanks something across her wrists.

“You’re annoying,” he grits out, and she balks at him.

“Get this shit off me, you lunatic!” she yells, fighting against the zip ties. “Let me the fuck go!”

“Andyou’ve got a mouth on you,” he grumbles, dragging her by the shoulder of her sweatshirt to the passenger door. “Iwillput you to sleep if you can’t stay quiet. I don’t want to, but you know I can. You know what they’ve trained us for.”

She falls silent and nods.

Effortless combat.
