Don’t engage with him. Just get away from him.

“Wow,” he says. “Not a car on the road. Impressive.”

She glances at the clock on the dashboard. He took his time driving to the city, and it’s been a little over an hour and a half since the sirens went off.

The sirens which she suspiciously doesn’t hear anymore.

“How long has it been since the sirens stopped?” she whispers.

“At least half an hour,” he answers. “Lincoln City is nothing if not punctual.”

She snorts before she can stop herself, and he glances at her with a raised eyebrow.

No. She doesn’t have anything in common withhim. She doesn’t like the city for her own reasons.

She wishes, more than anything, that he would stop looking at her with that peculiar expression.

He parks in the lot of the water processing plant and turns off the car. Anxiety stirs in her gut as he turns his attention to her. His scent swirls around her, thick and delicious as she fidgets in her seat.

“What’s your name?” he asks her.

She shakes her head.It doesn’t matter. Please stop looking at me. Please take these stupid ties off. I promise I won’t tell anyone. I don’t want to be in this car with you—

“We’re stuck together for a while, so you might as well tell me.”

She doesn’t like the arrogant tone in his voice, and she scowls. “We don’t have to be.”

“Unfortunately for you, you are an exceptional bargaining chip,” he continues. “And if my plans go to shit, you’ll be the last person I see when I die. I’d like us to be on a first name basis for something that intimate,” he says, a hint of humor in his tone.

Her heart sinks. Of course, he won’t let her go. She’s soimportantto Lincoln City that he could negotiate whatever he wanted in exchange for her.

“This is fucked up,” she murmurs, refusing to let tears fill her eyes. She can cry all she wants later, but right now, she won’t let this monster take any more of her pride.

He shrugs. “You really shouldn’t have been hanging around out there,” he says simply. “I would say this is partially your fault, as well. You’rethe one that’s making my plans easier.”

She grits her teeth and refuses to look at him. “Let me go,” spits, staring straight ahead at the building.

“Tell me your name.” His words are a purr, laced with the confidence of someone that knows they’re about to get what they want.

Her heart pounds, her head aches, and she’s tempted to tell him to fuck off again.

But there’s also a small voice inside her that wants to obey him.

Tell Alpha your name, it whispers to her.

“Hazel,” she murmurs.

“Hazel what?” His voice is still low and just as persuasive.

She fights the instinct again.

Obey Alpha!

“Hazel Wolfe,” she chokes out, her face flaming.

“Good girl.”

To her horror, her stomach does a delighted flip at his praise, and she wants to jump off the building. He’s a monster, she shouldn’t—
