“There will be,” Abel confirms, nodding. “There will bemanymore of us coming.”

His tone sends a chill down Hazel’s spine.

“She has to evacuate,” she says to him. “Please. Don’t force her to stay here with me.”

He narrows his eyes. “She’s a liability,” he says coldly.

Oh, no.

“Hazel.Stop,” Ava says.

“Please,” Hazel tries again, imploring Abel with her eyes. “She doesn’t even know what you look like.”

“Hazel—”

“Shut the fuck up, Ava!” she insists, her voice breaking as she turns to her friend. “You need to get out of here. This ismyfault. He wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for me.”

She tries to step toward Ava, but Abel still refuses to relinquish his hold. But that doesn’t stop her from seeing her friend’s eyes flash in recognition.

“You went there again,” Ava whispers. “Oh…you promised me you wouldn’t.”

Abel raises an eyebrow. “You should have kept better watch over your friend.”

“Stop!” Hazel steps closer to Abel, despite everything in her screaming not to. “If you let her go, I’ll stay with you.Willingly.”

“Hazel,no.”

“You’re not as great a liar as you think you are,” Abel replies evenly. “I’ve known you less than half a day, and I can sense your bullshit.”

His scent has changed, she realizes. It’s darker and more peppery.

He’spissed.

She’s telling the truth, though. She just has to make him realize it.

“She’s family to me,” she says, pleading with her eyes. “She’s the most important person in my life.”

He blinks.

“What an honor it must be,” he says unamused, “to be on the receiving end ofyouraffections.”

Ouch.

Ava takes a step closer, and Abel pulls Hazel against him, causing her to stumble against his chest.

“Come closer and you’ll never see her again,” he promises, his voice low.

He needs to let Ava go.

This is all my fault.

“You claim you’re not the bad guy,” Hazel tries again, pushing through the tears, desperate to save her friend. “So, prove it. Let an innocent person go,” she murmurs into her chest.

“Hazel, please—” Ava starts, but Hazel continues.

“I’ll stay with you, I swear it,” she says. “If you don’t believe me, tie me up, do whatever, I don’t care.”

She most certainly doesnotwant to be tied up. But if it saves Ava, it’s worth it.
