“What are you doing with my phone?” she demands, refusing to answer him. She’ll be damned if she opens up to him about any of her heartbreak surrounding her student.

“Resetting then disabling it,” he says, then looks back up at her, amused. “Does someone actually put up with your attitude enough to be in a relationship with you?”

Her mouth opens and closes as she realizes what he’s asking. “None of your business,” she snaps, and he cocks an eyebrow.

“Itismy business. I need to know if someone else will come looking for you. That will change our plans.”

“Ourplans?”

“Yes,” he says slowly, speaking to her as if she’s a child. “Of how long we can stay here. So, any boyfriends I should know about?”

Her face flushes in embarrassment. She doesn’t want to admit to him that she hasn’t had a partner in at least two years.

Maybe you were just waiting for the Alpha in front of you.

“No,” she mutters, both to him and to her inner voice.

“What about family?”

She shifts uncomfortably and crosses her arms across her chest. “Ava’s my family.”

“That’s not what I asked,” he sighs, running a hand through his unruly hair. “What about parents?”

She grits her teeth. “No one will come looking for me,” she snaps.

He stares at her a moment too long. “If you’re lying to me, things will be a lot worse for you than they are now,” he promises her.

Thelookis back, the one that reminds her that he is an Alpha and a cold-blooded killing machine.

A man at best, and at worst, a monster.

“I thought you said you wouldn’t hurt me,” she whispers, gripping the counter until her knuckles turn white.

“There’s more than one way to make someone miserable,” he says simply. “It’s something I’ve learned since I presented.”

He enters the kitchen, and she immediately backs up, his words stunning her.

What did theydoto him?

She doesn’t understand how he can be so unaffected by her scent. His aroma plows into her, consuming her senses and rendering her knees weak as she tries to not collapse against the sink.

“We’re going to have some ground rules,” he tells her softly, his eyes burning into hers. “And I need you to listen carefully.”

“Okay,” she breathes.

“Stay away from the front door. If I catch you trying to open it, I won’t hesitate to tie you up.”

Her eyes fill with tears at the threat.

Don’t you dare cry in front of him, you are stronger than that.

“Alright,” she whispers.

He takes a step closer, and she holds her breath, refusing to inhale his scent.

“If you try to attack me, the zip ties come out again.”

Her stomach does a flip as she imagines him tying her up, his weight pressed against her.
