Figures.

He pulls a small radio device out of his pack and dials it to Draven’s channel. This would be a lot easier with a cell phone, but, of course, that was confiscated years ago when he presented.

“You there?” Abel asks.

There’s brief static, then the Alpha answers.

“Shit, are you okay?”

Abel relaxes into her sofa, suddenly feeling more exhausted than he has in years. It’s the little things he misses, he realizes. Like a nice fuckingsitting area.

“I’m okay. Plan is still in place. How’s it going back there?”

“Most of us left. I can’t tell you much more, but you’re not the only one in it. It’s starting.”

A smile breaks out onto his face. He grins like an idiot and he hopes Hazel doesn’t come out of her bedroom to see the ridiculous expression he wears.

They can’t talk much more. He wouldn’t be surprised if the frequencies were being listened to, but he had to know if his friend was safe.

“Rumor is Betas are delayed as well. You’ve got time.”

The connection ends, and he breathes a sigh of relief.

Everything went as well as it could go—even better than expected.

Maybe he’s not a dead man walking just yet.

He knew he would likely die doing this—it was something he accepted a while ago, with the hope that something would change.

But he thinks about the Omega in the other room and, suddenly, he’s not so sure about leaving the world behind.

He hears soft sniffling.

Damn it.

Of course, she’s crying, idiot. You kidnapped her and are acting like the monster she thinks you are.

Fuck. This was never a part of the plan.

His wants are already shifting.

Heknowswhat he’s supposed to do. He knows it’s for the greater good, so that this awful cycle doesn’t continue.

So that a kid that never stood a chance doesn’t end up dead, simply because of their biology.

He pulls the documents out of his bag that Reid provided. Abel had been unaware that the psychopath had been holding onto them the entire time.

If either of them had been found with the documents on the island, they would most likely be thrown into some sort of hellish Alpha prison.

Would Hazel believe him if he showed her?

Probably not.

She’s got her own issues, her own secrets, and she’s made it very clear she doesn’t intend to divulge them to him anytime soon, for good reason.

He spends another minute listening to her cry and doing his best not to let guilt overwhelm him.

He fights the urge tocomforther.
