“You’re a poor liar,” he states, holding both plates and motioning towards her couch. “Come eat with me.”

It’s not even sexual, but the way he says it makes her shiver.

Thenerveof him.

Yet instead of arguing, she reluctantly joins him on her couch, sitting as far away from him as possible.

His scent is too damn tempting, and he probably knows it.

How ironic that the roles are reversed.

He’s the controlled one, and she’s internally perving out on him.

She glances at the plate and her mouth waters as she marvels at the perfectly cooked meal. He hands it to her, and their fingers brush.

It’s electric.

“Thank you,” she mutters, wondering when she decided she was going to have manners with her captor.

Maybe she’s developing Stockholm Syndrome.

She hasn’t glanced at the front door once since his warning, and she finds she doesn’t exactly want to.

Where would she go, anyway? He has her car keys, and she can’t just walk through the city streets blindly.

She realizes with horror that she’s safer staying with him than running away.

Well, that’s just great.

She takes a bite of the omelet and fights back a moan.

“Where did you learn to cook like this?” she demands around a mouthful of egg.

He grins, showing straight, white teeth. He has no fangs, despite what they told her in school.

“My father taught me, before,” he says. “I used to cook for my family all the time.”

She swallows guiltily.

He had a family before he presented. Of course he did, just like every other kid, but it hits her differently now that she’s talking to him.

It leaves a sour taste in her mouth, even with his excellent cooking.

She thinks of Connor. Will he ever see his mother again or is he doomed to live the life that Abel endured?

“I’m sorry,” she says suddenly.

He places his fork down and looks at her pointedly. “For what?” he asks carefully.

For what, indeed.

“I…” she trails off, unable to look at him anymore.

“No, really, Hazel. Why are you sorry?”

His voice is low and laced with danger.

“You were torn away from your family,” she says slowly, her gaze fixed on her food. “I’m sorry that happened to you.”
